Former Nashua Silver Knight and Merrimack High School standout Mickey Gasper was selected by the Boston Red Sox in Wednesday’s Minor League portion of Major League Baseball’s Rule 5 Draft.

Gasper, who was the Futures League Player of the Year in 2016 with the Silver Knights, was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 27th round of the Major League Amateur Draft out of Bryant University. He spent five seasons in the Yankees organization, playing catcher, first and even second base, making it as high as Triple A Scranton at the start of last year but ended up playing most of the 2023 season in Double A Somerset.

“I think a change of scenery, I look back through my career, and it’s helped me,” Gasper said. “It’s benefited me throughout my career.”

This is not to be confused with the Major League Rule 5 Draft. In that, players selected cost $100,000 and have to be offered back to the original team if not selected to the 26-man big-league roster.

However in the Minor League portion, the cost is between $12,500 and $24,500 and they don’t have to make the Major League club to stay in the organization; nor do they have to be offered back to their original team if an attempt is made to clear them through waivers.

In five minor league seasons, Gasper hit .258 with 36 homers and 149 RBIs with an OPS of .801.
