NASHUA – First-year midfielder Jayden Medlin scored his first collegiate goal in the final minutes to provide Rivier men’s soccer a precious 1-1 draw against Colby-Sawyer in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday night at Merrill Field.

The Raiders now sit at 1-4-4 (1-3-1 GNAC) while the Chargers now hold a record of 2-4-3 (1-2-1 GNAC).

In the early portion of the first half, Rivier goalkeeper Dominic Cunha was put to the test as he extended to knock a Jonathan Platti free kick off the crossbar. With 22:58 elapsed in the first half, Colby-Sawyer’s Brandon Mejia found Jonathan Platti in space, who fired a shot off the post. Nearly 15 minutes later, the Chargers would break the deadlock as Judson DiMaria headed in a corner kick from David Herrera to put the visitors up 1-0 going into the half.

Over five minutes into the second half, Rivier had a scoring chance when a deep feed from back Chris Antonelli found a streaking Jason Harlow in stride, however, Harlow’s attempt was thwarted at the top of the box by an adventurous Yener Bartolon.

After being subbed on with less than six minutes to play in the match, Medlin made his presence known, burying a cross from Drew Sacca to equalize the match at 1-1. The Raiders would have two more shots on goal in a last-ditch effort to steal a victory, but Bartolon was up to the task on each. Sean Seeley, who subbed in for Cunha in the second half due to injury, dove out to stuff a Platti opportunity in the final minute and preserve the tie.

Both teams fired 11 shots in the contest, with Colby-Sawyer putting six on net to Rivier’s four. The Raiders narrowly edged the Chargers in corners, 3-2.

Rivier will continue its four-game homestand in a Saturday GNAC matchup against Norwich, set to kick off at 3p.m. as part of a Rivier Alumni Reunion Weekend triple-header from Merrill Field.

RIVIER 3, SAINT JOSEPH (Conn.) 0

Fresh off a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week nod, junior middle Lily Sills once again dominated as the Raiders swept Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Wednesday night at Calhoun Gymnasium in West Hartford, Conn.

The Raiders were victorious over USJ by set scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 to improve to 7-3 (4-1 GNAC), while the Blue Jays fell to 1-13 (1-4 GNAC) on the season.

With the score tied at 7-7 in the first set, USJ rattled off five-straight points, four of which came from Nicole Albert aces, to put the Blue Jays on top 12-7. Leading 15-9 later in the set, Saint Joseph would commit two consecutive attack errors before Sills’ first kill of the match forced the home team into a timeout, still leading by three. Rivier continued to play catch-up until a string of three-straight points, capped off by a USJ attack error, put the Raiders on top, 22-21, and forced the Blue Jays to burn their final timeout of the frame. Rivier closed out the set from there to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Hannah Raab and Brynn Roche each had three kills in the first set, as Ryan Hicks recorded eight assists and Sofia Pawlusik notched two aces.

A pair of Blue Jays errors followed by a Sills ace and Roche kill put Rivier up 23-19 to help advance into the third set with a 2-0 lead. Sam Driend recorded two kills while Callie Nanos dug six USJ attacks in the set.

In the third set, Hicks would give the Raiders their first lead on an ace making it 13-12. Roche then notched a kill to extend Rivier’s lead to 16-13 and force USJ into a timeout. The offense would continue to produce as Driend, Roche, Meghan North, and Sill all recorded kills over the remainder of the set as Rivier came away with its third victory by way of the sweep this season. Nannos again picked up six digs in the final set while Sills notched five kills at a .444 clip.
