The Futures Collegiate Baseball League crowned a new, first-time champion on Sunday night.
The Norwich Sea Unicorns, in their third year in the FCBL, beat fellow third-year Vermont Lake Monsters 2-1 at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Conn. to capture the title.
While usually the finals are a best of three, the weather delayed the semifinal series so the league opted for a one-game title bout so the players could return home and to their schools.
It’s the second straight year Vermont, which won the crown in their first season two years ago, dropped a winner-take-all by one run. The Monsters fell to Nashua last year in a deciding Game 3. This game, though, lacked the ninth inning drama of a year ago, as in this one-game setting, top seed Norwich trailed 1-0 early on, tied the game in the third and scored the game winner in the fifth.
Former Silver Knight Johnny Knox reached on an error in the fifth and came around to score on Zach Donahue’s RBI single.
Vermont’s only run came in the second on a Kyle Lodise RBI double, but Norwich got the equalizer in the third when Ray Leonzi walked, went to third on a Knox single, and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Donahue.
Norwich outhit Vermont 9-6 and Knox finished the postseason hitting .533.
Sea Unicorns reliever Mark Capell got the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Daniel Cohen picked up the save with three scoreless, one-hit frames.
