NORWICH, Conn. — Just hours ago, the Silver Knights were posting runs in abundance. A 16-run mercy victory gave Nashua a win heading into the weekend. Yet, what once came easy to the Knights a night prior came at a premium on Saturday as Nashua couldn’t buy a run on their final road trip of the season, falling to Norwich 2-0.

Nashua would not be completely silent on offense, with the Knights outhitting the Sea Unicorns eight to five. Executing with these runners on base, however, would be the downfall of the Knights’ night. Seven left on base, with three of those in scoring position, was the story of the scoreless night with Nashua striking out nine times in total.

After Saturday’s loss, the Silver Knights (24-39) will look to end their 2023 season on a high note with Vermont coming to Holman Stadium today at 3 p.m., looking to secure the highest seed possible heading into this week’s playoffs — playoffs the Knights will miss for just the second time in 13 seasons.

Plenty of opportunities were on the table for the Knights, including a two-out triple from SNHU’s Nater Wachter in the third. Wachter would be stranded 90 feet away from Nashua’s first run of the night, summarizing the ballgame of the red and black.

Norwich, on the other hand, would get on the scoreboard right away. A leadoff double from Holy Cross’s CJ Egrie set him up to score after a stolen base and wild pitch to put the Unicorns up 1-0 in the first. UConn’s Tyler Minick would post a sacrifice fly in the second for back-to-back innings with a score.

Despite the early scoring, the Knights’ pitching staff would do a good job at containing the Norwich offense. Saint Anselm’s Andrew Chenevert tossed six innings with only one earned run on four hits. Nashua’s starter in Chenevert, who has now gone at least six innings in two of his last three outings, posted a great start but the Knights still find themselves behind.

Nashua’s bullpen would also deliver with Endicott’s Kyan Bagshaw and Northeastern’s Ryan Griffin combining for only one hit in two scoreless innings. As the pitching staff did their job,the offense could not wake up in time to get back into it. Nashua would go 1-2-3 in the ninth, falling to the Sea Unicorns for the final time in 2023.
