Those who feel that former New England Patriots head coach Bill Parcells belongs in the Patriots Hall of Fame have yet another chance to possibly get their wish.
Parcells, already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was one of three finalists selected by a nomination committee, it was announced on Thursday. The other two are former Patriots players Logan Mankins and Mike Vrabel.
Parcells was the Patriots head coach for four seasons, from 1993-96 and in his final season took the Patriots to their second Super Bowl appearance, but they fell to the Green Bay Packers. After that game, Parcells left New England in a controversial move – he wanted to be involved more in personnel decisions — to coach the New York Jets, considered the team’s chief rival. It’s that departure, plus the disconnect current fans, who vote for the inductee once the finalists are named, likely have with what Parcells did close to 30 years ago that are blamed for his not making the Patriots Hall. However, he is credited with helping to change the culture of the franchise, and he hired Bill Belichick to his staff as a defensive assistant that Super Bowl season. This is the fifth time he’s been a finalist, the other years being in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2020.
Vrabel, who now is the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, was a member of three Patriots Super Bowl teams (2001, 2003, 2004) as a linebacker and sometime red zone target on offense. He had 10 receptions, two in Super Bowl wins. Vrabel is a finalist for the seventh time.
Mankins, meanwhile, was a popular offensive lineman from 2005-2013 before being traded to Tampa Bay. A guard, he is considered one of the best offensive linemen in Patriots history. He earned six All-Pro and six Pro Bowl honors with the Patriots. This is the second straight year he’s a finalist.
Fans can vote on the Patriots website at https://www.patriots.com/hof through midnight EDT on May 2. This year’s inductee will be announced later that week.
PATRIOTS SIGN A QB
The Patriots, who had only Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe as quarterbacks on their roster, added a third on Thursday with the signing of former Arizona Cardinal Trace McSorley.
McSorley is a veteran of four NFL seasons, as he played with Baltimore from 2019-2021. He’s played in nine games in his career with one start, that coming last Dec. 25 vs. Tampa Bay as he went 25 of 45 for 217 yards. He played six games for the Cardinals last year, completing 45 of 83 overall for 412 yards.
There was talk the Patriots would look to add a veteran QB this spring and now they have.
WIGGINS NEW BROCKTON COACH
Former Patriots tight end Jermaine Wiggins, whose latest claim to fame is as a Boston radio morning personality on WEEI, has been named the new head football coach at Brockton High School.
Wiggins is an East Boston native and was a key member of the 2001 Super Bowl championship team. He caught a key pass on that game-winning drive, and he also caught 10 passes in the earlier playoff win over the Oakland Raiders, the famed “Snow Bowl.”
Longtime Brockton coach Peter Colombo retired after 20 seasons and two state titles.
Wiggins, who spent the better part of three seasons as a Patriot, also played for Minnesota, Carolina and Indianapolis and the New York Jets.
