CHICOPEE, Mass. — The Rivier University baseball team picked up four runs in the top of the ninth to beat Elms 12-9 and salvage a split of their GNAC doubleheader Sunday. Elms won the first game
After giving up six runs in the bottom of the eighth on five straight hits, the Raiders (5-13, 2-2 GNAC) wouldn’t go down quietly, as they regained the lead in the top of the ninth with another four-run inning. Zach Tavares would give his team the lead back on a single to left field that plated two. Now up 10-9, Riv would put another two runs on the board on a Zach White single to center field, giving them a three-run cushion and ultimately the win.
Hudson’s Ty Baker would get the win (3-1), pitching the last two innings of the contest, allowing just one hit, with a strikeout.
The opener didn’t go Rivier’s way. The Raiders got the scoring started in the top of the first after two hits, and a hit by pitch Patrick Young would bring two in to score on a single to center field. The Blazers responded in the bottom of the frame with a three-run inning. Aaron Young pushed the first across on a single. Tyler Galenski would bring two more in on a double to give Elms a 3-2 lead.
The Blazers (12-4, 3-1 GNAC) would tack on two more in the second inning, ending their run-scoring for the remainder of the game. George Chaya brought the fourth run in of the game on a single to center field. The last run would come across on a wild pitch. The Raiders would score the last run of the game in the top of the sixth on a Tavares single.
Wesly Martinez was tagged with the loss (1-4) after throwing in five innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs, and three strikeouts.
Rivier will be back in action Tuesday for a single nine-inning game against Framingham State at 3 p.m.
