Rivier Roundup: Newell aids women’s lax; baseball swept

NASHUA — The Rivier University women’s lacrosse team picked up a big conference win, 15-5 over Regis Sunday afternoon at Merrill Field, thanks to Sarah Lachance’s six goals and three assists, plus the help of several locals. That included Litchfield’s Caitlin Newell, who had four goals and two assists.

The win vaults the Raiders over the .500 mark overall at 3-2, and evens their Great Northeast Athletic Conference record at 2-2.

Regis (4-3, 2-3 GNAC) would score first with a goal recorded by Madeline Conover in the first quarter. Rivier then went on to put away six goals. Lachance got the scoring started for the Raiders with an assist from Newell. Pelham’s Cassie Hemmerdinger earned the second goal, then Lachance from Nashua’s Bailey Carroll Hemmerdinger from Milford’s Ashley Wilder , Lachance from Carroll again, and Newell with the final Riv goal in the first quarter. On a free position shot, Kylee Marley of the Pride knocked in a goal, chipping away at the score.

In the second quarter, Rivier scored three goals in a row. At 13:23, Lachance found Carroll who buried a Raiders goal. Rivier’s Newell escaped the Pride defenders to score with another assist credited to Lachance. Lachance then went on to score her own goal with Rachel Hinkley on the assist. Regis put in two goals about 20 seconds apart, one from Mia Rogers on a free position shot and another from Conover.

In the third quarter, Newbury’s Abby Nadeau took advantage on the player-up opportunity to score a Raiders goal with an assist granted to McKenna Green . Newell raced by Regis to score an unassisted goal at 12:48 on the clock. Lachance put away a player up goal to finish out the quarter.

Newell was able to find the back of the net when the Raiders were down a player at 14:21 in the fourth quarter, the assist was credited to Lachance. Carroll earned a Riv goal, putting the Raiders up by 10. Newell passed to Lachance who scored the last goal of the game for the Raiders. Rogers of Regis added on a goal from a free position shot at 4:41.

Riv goalie Lindsey Kruger recorded 11 saves this afternoon to earn the win.

Rivier heads to Standish, Me. to face St.Joseph’s at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

It was a tough day for the Raiders (3-10) at Buzzard’s Bay. In game one, all scoring was done by the fourth inning.

The Bucs got on the board to start things off in the bottom of the first inning on a ground out RBI. The Raiders would knot it back up at 1-1 in the top of the second after Auburn’s Jacob Boudreau singled to center field.

Mass Maritime would push two more across in the bottom of the frame after a fielding error in left field plated two runs, giving the hosting squad a 3-1 lead. Rivier would bring it back within one run in the top of the third after a throwing error.

Brett Velzis would put the Bucs back up by two in the bottom half of the third on a solo shot to right center field. The Raiders would again bring it back within one at 4-3 in the top of the fourth on a groundout RBI by Dylan Aliberti (Sandown, NH). Mass Maritime, though, would break the game open in the bottom of the fourth with a five-spot

Riv’s Anthony Morro (0-3) too the loss after going 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Bucs put together runs in every inning but the sixth. Rivier opened this game in the first inning by plating one run on a Zachary White single through the right side. MMA would answer back with six unanswered runs through the first to the fifth inning. In that stretch, Mass Maritime would plate two in the first and third inning and one in the second and fourth inning.

The Raiders would end the run in the top of the fifth on a Frank Gulezian (Derry) two-run shot to right center field to make it 6-3. The Bucs would answer back in the bottom of the frame with another five-run inning.

Michael Overland was tagged with the loss (0-1) after going 4.1 innings with nine hits allowed, eight earned runs, with two strikeouts.

Riv gets back at it today at noon on the road in a GNAC matchup with Albertus Magnus.
