Another piece of the New England Patriots offense is on the move.
ESPN reported Monday night that running back Damien Harris has agreed to a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills.
Harris formed a solid one-two backfield punch with the Patriots Rhamondre Stevenson, but injuries kept derailing his progress as a Patriot. Last year he played in just 11 games, rushing for 426 yards. Stevenson, a favorite of Patriots coach Bill Belichick, basically became the No. 1 back as he rushed for 1,040 yards last season.
However, after basically a year of inactivity his rookie season after being drafted in the third round of the 2019 draft out of Alabama, Harris earned a more prominent role in the New England offense. The four-year veteran had a career high 929 rushing yards and 15 TDs in 2021. In 2020 he rushed for 691 yards and two TDs.
But now he will try to be just as effective for an AFC East rival whom the Patriots will see twice next season.
The Patriots recently signed free agent back James Robinson, basically spelling the end of Harris’ New England tenure. But they also have two other backs who were rookies last year, Pierre Strong, Jr. and Kevin Harris. Both showed promise in limited roles.
Harris basically confirmed the signing on Twitter, posting “LET’S GO BUFFALO #BillsMafia” with a couple of heart symbols in between.
As for key departures, the Patriots have let Jakobi Meyers (Raiders) and Harris sign elsewhere, traded tight end Jonnu Smith, and have cut punter Jake Bailey, backup QB Brian Hoyer, and probably the biggest surprise, cornerback Jalen Mills.
MCCOURTY TO BE HONORED
Regarding another key departure: The Patriots Tuesday will honor retired safety Devin McCourty today with a retirement ceremony/press conference at the Patriots Hall of Fame. Team owner Robert Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick are also expected to be present.
NEWTON KEEPS TRYING
Former Patriots and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton still wants to continue his NFL career. Newton announced he will throw at his alma mater Auburn’s Pro Day on Tuesday.
He hasn’t played since the 2021 season. After losing the Patriots QB battle to then-rookie Mac Jones and being released in training camp in 2021, he hooked on with the team that drafted him and which he took to a Super Bowl, Carolina, playing half a season with the Panthers.
