UNH Hoop Roundup: Daniels leads ‘Cats past Maine

DURHAM – The University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team defeats the University of Maine Wednesday night at Lundholm Gym, 74-62, as junior Clarence Daniels earns his 14th double-double this season in a Buffalo Wild Border Battle game.
With the win, UNH improves to 13-13 (8-6 AE) and Maine falls to 11-16 (5-9 AE).
At the end of the opening frame, UNH led Maine, 35-30.
Daniels started the ‘Cats off in the second half with a layup over a Black Bear defender in the lane and followed it up by drawing a foul on a three-pointer, netting two of his three free throws to give the Wildcats a nine-point lead.
Max Herasme knocked down his second three of the game to bring the ‘Cats lead up to ten points, 50-40 with 10:46 left in regulation.
Nick Johnson showed off his strength with a driving layup through the lane as UNH led 57-46 with 6:33 left.
Kyree Brown gave the ‘Cats their largest lead of the contest after a driving layup made the score 59-46 with under six minutes left to play.
Johnson netted a team-high third three-pointer from the corner to push the scoring margin to 64-46 with 4:17 remaining.
The Wildcats return to action when they travel to UMass Lowell in their last road game of the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Tsongas Center at 5 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
MAINE 80, UNH 67
Freshman guard Avery O’Connor (Dedham, Mass.) recorded a double double in the Wildcats’ loss in Orono.
O’Connor scored 21 points and collected 12 rebounds for UNH in the contest.
The Wildcats’ record falls to 7-20 (2-13 AE) and Maine’s improves to 14-13 (10-5 AE).
Three Wildcats had points in the double digits; O’Connor, Adara Groman and Breezie Williams.
The ‘Cats return to Lundholm Gym for Senior Day when they take on UMass Lowell on Saturday at 1 p.m.
