Rivier Roundup: Emmanuel rules Muldoon; women’s ice hockey ties

It was a tough day at the Muldoon Center for the Rivier University basketball teams as part of a busy Raider day.

Overall, Rivier athletic teams went 1-3-1, with women’s ice hockey involved in a tie and men’s volleyball getting a split.

Here’s the rundown:

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

EMMANUEL 83, RIVIER 61

The Raiders (13-12, 10-7 GNAC) competed in the first half forcing 13 turnovers, but could not hold on in the second half. Lonodnderry’s Brianna Wilcox of Rivier buried 16 points today, nine of which were 3-pointers. Lyric Grumblatt added 12 points and Anna Stenger (Weare, NH) contributed 11 points for Riv.

Olivia Matela led Emmanuel earning a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Three other Saints reached double digits. Yannie Chan and Allison Wild both scored 12 apiece and Megan Reilly put up 10 points.

Rivier was only able to shoot 52.6% from the foul line, while Emmanuel shot 83.3% behind the line.

Rivier will be playing in the GNAC quarterfinals on Tuesday, hoping for a home game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

EMMANUEL 92, RIVIER 55

The Raiders ended their season at 2-23, 0-17 in the GNAC. Nikolas Pignone led the way for the Raiders, putting up 13 points. Nesta Roberts contributed 11 points and four rebounds.

Zaire Baines came off the bench for Emmanuel to earn 25 points. Donte Pope added 13 points, Ken Jean-Francois scored 12 points, Ryan Grijalva put up 10 points for the Saints. Emmanuel dominated the second half, to receive their 17th win of the season.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

RIVIER 3, WORCESTER STATE 3

In the second period at Skate 3, four goals were scored. Worcester State’s Anya Laxton put away the first goal with the assist credited to Kiersten Erickson. Berlin’s Jillian Hallee answered back on the power play with a goal at 9:59 on the clock, assists from Briana Paxson and Brianna Parent.

About two minutes later, Amy MacGlashing snuck the puck by Rachel Hinkley for a Lancers goal with assists granted to Sydney Vautour and Emily Pavoni. Jessica Driscoll of Rivier took advantage on the power play, evening the score to 2-2, the assists were credited to Caeli Reed (Norwood, MA) and Hallee.

Quickly into the third frame Clare Conway buried the Lancers third and final goal of the game. But Chiara Skeels was able to drift by the Lancers defenders to find the back of the net to tie the game. Neither team was able to score in OT.

Hinkley had 64 saves tonight for the Raiders. Kelsey Czerniawski saved 21 shots in net for the Lancers.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

RIVIER SPLITS WITH SAGE, NICHOLS

Rivier men’s volleyball split the day, taking down Sage in game one, then falling to Nichols College in game two. Both contests were non-conference matchups.

The Raiders handled Sage with relative ease taking the match 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-18). Riv bolstered a .403 kill percentage, totaling 35 kills to Sage’s 17. Sokunbuth Ly (Lowell, MA) led the way with nine kills. Isaac Borges (New Boston, NH) finished just behind him with eight. Neil Rea of Windha dished out 31 assists.

For 3-11 Sage, Elijah Tortorici topped his team with six kills. Ryan Jennings tallied 12 assists giving him a team-high.

However, in nightcap, the Raiders went up 2-0 on the Bison (9-3) but dropped the following three sets in a 3-2 loss (25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 10-15). Luis Martinez topped all with 19 kills. Carlos Mercado was second on the team with 11. Dylan Urbanski fell just shy of 50 assists with 48.

For the Raiders, Borges led the way with 13 kills. Ly finished just behind him with 12. Rea had a solid performance, finishing with 45 assists.

Rivier (6-5) will be back Wednesday against Springfield College in the Muldoon Center at 7:00 PM.
