UNH Roundup: Women’s hoop edges Bryant; ‘Cats edge UML

DURHAM — Freshman guard Breezie Williams and senior center Brooke Kane of Derry both scored career high points, leading the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team to a 66-47 victory over Bryant Saturday afternoon in Durham.

Kane captured her third straight, season fourth double-double for the ‘Cats scoring 24 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Williams scored 19 points in the contest.

The Wildcats’ record improves to 7-15 (2-8 AE) and Bryant’s falls to 7-17 (1-10 AE). The Wildcats travel to Binghamton to take on the Bearcats on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The ‘Cats went on a late 8-0 run in the final minutes of the opening quarter to take a 10-point lead and maintained it through the second and thirs quarters. Within the first minute of the final quarter, Kane scored a three-pointer to lengthen the lead by 11 and also passing her career high points. In the quarter, the Cats’ outscored the Bulldogs 25-16. William’s jumper in the final seconds secured the Wildcat win and her career high.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BRYANT 70, UNH 46

The Wildcats had their three-game win streak come to an end at the Chace Athletic Center. With the loss, UNH falls to 11-12 (6-4 AE) and Bryant improves to 15-8 (6-4 AE).

Junior Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the game with a corner three to put the ‘Cats up 3-0.

Two layups from junior Clarence Daniels (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) gave UNH an early 7-2 just before the first media timeout.

Bryant responded with a 9-1 run to put the Bulldogs out in front 11-8 with under ten minutes left to play in the half.

The Wildcats regained the lead when graduate student Jaxson Baker (Phoenix, Ariz.) drilled a three-pointer from the corner to make the score 22-20 with 5:02 remaining in the half.

In the final five minutes of the half, the teams traded baskets to head into the locker room in a close one with UNH leading 30-29.

But the second half was far different.Bryant came out firing in the second half, hitting 6 of their first 8 shot attempts to go on a 15-2 run, building a 44-32 lead.

The Bulldogs scored another seven unanswered points to build their largest lead of the game, 51-32 with 13:30 left in the game.

MEN’S HOCKEY

UNH 5, UMASS-LOWELL 4

LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman defenseman Damien Carfagna (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) and senior captain Chase Stevenson (West Kelowna, British Columbia) each scored two goals, and freshmen goaltender Tyler Muszelik (Long Valley, N.J.) made 40 saves at the Tsongas Center.

Freshman forward Stiven Sardarian (Saint Petersburg, Russia) posted three assists for three points.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 9-18-1 (4-13-1 Hockey East), while the River Hawks fall to 15-10-2 (9-6-2 Hockey East).

UNH went 2-0-0 this weekend with wins over two ranked teams with the 3-2 overtime victory versus No. 15 Merrimack and tonight’s win versus the No. 16 River Hawks.

The Wildcats will return to action on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11 versus UConn at the Whittemore Center.
