Rivier Roundup: Grumblatt hits 1,000; men edged 75-74

NASHUA — Saturday was a historic day at the Muldoon Fitness Center.

The Rivier women’s basketball team took down Anna Maria College this afternoon in GNAC action in the Muldoon Center 60-39, but that’s only part of the story.

Raider Lyric Grumblatt of finished with 12 points along with, scoring her 1,000 points, breaking a GNAC record of fastest player to 1,000 points. She completed the feat in 44 games. The previous record, held by Rivier’s Head Coach Deanna Purcell, was 46 games.

In a low-scoring affair, the Raiders (9-9, 6-4 GNAC) were able to hold the AMCATS to 11 points in the first half. Rivier came out in the second half firing from behind the arc, netting four of their five three-point shots to start the third.

Bea Stafford led the way for the Raiders, scoring 16 points along with ten rebounds.

Riv is at Emmanuel Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

ANNA MARIA 75, RIVIER 74

A difficult week resulted in a tough loss for the Raiders, who were playing under interim coach Jim Migneault after previous head man Lance Bisson and the school parted ways on Wednesday.

The Raiders played possibly their best game in this 12-game losing streak that puts them now 2-16 overall, 0-10 in the GNAC.

After struggling to score in the opening minutes of the contest, the Raiders would come back after being down 19-9. Riv chipped away at the deficit and found themselves taking a 37-28 lead into the half.

A large part of the Raiders successes tonight stemmed from a 32-point effort from Nikolas Pignone. Pignone had 20 after the first half.

For the AMCATS (4-13, 3-6 GNAC), Trevian Grenon had a team-high 13 points while coming off the bench. Deandre Wallace was just shy of Grenon with 12 points.

Riv is at Emmanuel on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

MEN’S HOCKEY

UMASS-DARTMOUTH 4, RIVIER 1

Dartmouth got on the board just eight seconds into the first period. Cade Hanley got them on the board after receiving a pass from Justin Weinbrenner and Ryan Mascali.

After a scoreless second period, the Corsairs (5-9-2) added two more goals, with the first coming on a power play opportunity from Tyler Stewart. Dominic Dumas tacked on the second in the period 13:59 in. Rivier (5-9-2) got on the board 14:31 into the third on a goal from Jon Tavella (E. Longmeadow, MA) after receiving a pass from Nicolas Paolucci.

Dartmouth would add on one final goal on an empty net to get the 4-1 final. Michael Mania was credited with the final score of the evening.

Raider netminder Luke Newell was tagged with the loss falling to 3-5-2 on the season after racking up 34 saves. Marshall McKallip got the win and improved to 1-1 on the season after saving 33 shots.
