Rivier Roundup: Arnold’s goal gives Raiders OT win; split for hoop teams

BOSTON, Mass. — Rivier University’s Avery Arnold skated by Framingham State’s defenders to record the game-winning goal in a 2-1 overtime win at Warriors Ice Arena Saturday night — a home win away from home for the Raiders, now 5-5-1.

In the second period, Riv’s Josh Sanchez (Potsdam, NY) secured a goal with assists credited to Logan Dapprich and Carter Poulin of Berlin.

Dylan Marty tied the game in the third period for the Rams with passes from Johnny Baker and Jake Barcelou.

Rivier will take on Westfield State on Tuesday at Nashua’s Conway Arena at 7:10 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

RIVIER 85, DEAN 43

This was a very one-sided contest seeing the Raiders (1-0 GNAC, 4-5 overall) take all quarters other than the second, where both teams only put up 10 points each. 

The Raiders had four student-athletes in double digits, led by Nashua’s Hannah Muchemore with 19 points to go along with her six assists. Brianna Wilcox of Londonderry made her collegiate debut this afternoon, scoring 14 points along with eight rebounds and six steals. 

The Bulldogs shot just 20.3% from the field. They were 0-for-11 from deep. Tori Andrewski led the way for Dean with 13 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Tori Viau, who added 12 points of her own. 

MEN’S BASKETBALL

DEAN 87, RIVIER 79

The Raiders (0-1 GNAC, 2-7 overall) and Bulldogs (5-2, 1-0 GNAC) traded buckets going neck and neck for the majority of the first half as both defenses set the tone. Nikolas Pignone (Stoneham, MA) hit some tough shots late in the first half to cut the Raider deficit to 10 Nesta Roberts anchored the post for the second half, tallying 14 points and seven rebounds. However, Dean outrebounded Rivier overall, 40-30 on the day.

Dorien Ruffin led the Bulldogs with 22 points, while Malik Spearman had a double-double, contributing 21 points and ten rebounds. Coming off the bench, Jakobi Greenleaf had 12 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs. 

Josef Buford  recorded 11 points and seven rebounds for the Raiders while Pharaoh Davis and Goffstown’s Robenson Baguidy  facilitated the late-game offense. Davis poured in 13 points and eight assists, complementing Baguidy’s eight points and four assists. 

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

SUNY POTSDAM 6, RIVIER 1

Potsdam went up 1-0 after the first period. Keely Towne netted her first of two in the contest just 9:14 in. 

The Bears would pour it on in the second period adding five goals. Kaylee Merrill scored the first two, followed by Towne, Emily DellaNeve, and Alex Quin. 

The Raiders would break the shutout in the third period on a Power Play goal by Jessica Driscoll after quick passes from teammates Jillian Hallee and Briana Paxson. 

Rachel Symmes had 41 saves in goal for Riv, now 2-5-2 and at Castleton University in a tourney next Friday at 4 p.m.
