UNH women blank No. 14 UConn; Wildcat men fall to BU

DURHAM - Nicky Harnett stopped all 28 shots on goal while both Nicole Kelly and Marina Alvarez recorded two points to lead the University of New Hampshire women’s hockey team to Friday afternoon’s 4-0 victory against 14th-ranked University of Connecticut at the Whittemore Arena. 

Harnett made 12 of her 28 saves in the first period en route to her second shutout of the season and fifth career. Kelly, a junior forward, and Alvarez, a sophomore defenseman, both tallied a goal and an assist. 

Freshman forward Kelly Harty (Billerica, Mass.) and grad student defenseman Emily Rickwood (Brantford, Ontario) netted UNH’s other goals; it was Harty’s first career goal. 

UConn goalie Tia Chan was credited with 16 saves and surrendered three goals; Alvarez’s tally was an empty-netter with 11.3 seconds remaining. 

The Wildcats improve to 6-13-0 overall and 5-10-0 in Hockey East) while the Huskies move to 11-8-2, 6-7-2. 

UNH and UConn face off again today (2 p.m.) at the Whittemore Center on Alumni Day.

MEN’S HOCKEY

BU 6, UNH 3

Freshman forward Cy LeClerc of Brentwood scored two goals for the Wildcats but the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team fell to Boston University at the Whittemore Center.

The Wildcats fall to 3-12-1 (0-10-1 Hockey East), while the Terriers improve to 9-4-0 (6-3-0 Hockey East).

With the score tied 3-3 after two, the No. 7 ranked Terriers scored three third period goals. At 10:22 of the third period the Terriers made it 4-3 when Ty Gallagher sent a wide pass to Domenick Fensore who launched the puck to the back of the net. 

At 11:34 of the third period BU claimed the 5-3 lead when Ethan Phillips ripped a shot stick side. At 19:14 of the third period Fensore made it 6-3 for the Terriers as he scored on the power play for the 6-3 final score. 

The two teams meet again tonight at BU’s Agganis Arena at 6.
