UNH’s Rainey, Sheppard combine to blank St. Francis
BROOKLYN – Sophomore Sally Rainey of West Lebanon (pictured above) and grad student Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y) of the University of New Hampshire women’s soccer team combined to shut out St. Francis College Brooklyn in Sunday’s 1-0 victory at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Rainey played the final 73:42 of the game and made two saves to earn the win in her collegiate debut. Sheppard exited at 16:18 and was also credited with two saves. UNH broke the scoreless tie on an own goal in the 77th minute.
SFC goalie Klil Keshwar stopped three shots and the Terriers recorded two team saves for a total of five saves.
UNH improved to 1-1-0 and St. Francis College Brooklyn is now 0-1-1. UNH returns to action Aug. 25 (6 p.m.) against Siena College at Wildcat Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, defense again controlled play in the final 45 minutes as the teams combined for eight shots (three on goal) and three corners.
In the 48th minute, the Terriers’ defense blocked UNH shots by juniors Emily Bini (Guilderland, N.Y.) and Alivia Kelly (Pembroke, Mass.).
Haralz, with her back to goal, trapped a throw-in along the right endline, turned and her centering pass was redirected into the goal by a SFC defender at 76:32 to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
In the 81st minute, Warren raced past a defender to run onto a long thru ball and her shot from the top of the box was stopped by the oncoming Keshwar.
The Wildcats controlled the rebound and Guarente’s shot, also from the top of the box, was caught by Keshwar to keep the margin at one goal.
St. Francis College Brooklyn earned a corner with one minute remaining but UNH’s defense did not allow a shot the rest of the way to preserve the win.
