NASHUA – The Nashua Silver Knights are about to get an education.
Or give one, depending on how you look at it.
It’s Education Week for the Knights and the Worcester Bravehearts, part of a leaguewide effort the first few weeks of the season as the teams will be playing a morning Education Day game today in Worcester and Wednesday the Knights host Brockton with youths fromarea schools attending in an organized way.
And, the games will be as interactive as possible, as, in Nashua, kids submitted rules that the players have to follow. Because of that, some of the games will be exhibitions and not count in the standings – including the Wednesday 10:30 a.m. Education Day Game with the Rox at Holman Stadium.
However, Silver Knights general manager Cam Cook, who had a big say in the creativity of the Education Day games, confirmed that today’s 10:30 a.m. Education Day game at Worcester will indeed count in the standings.
So Tuesday yes, Wednesday no. Wednesday’s game at Holman is not even listed on the league schedule.
Here are some of the zany rules that will be used, according to Knights manager Kyle Jackson:
Hitters who strike out will have to cluck like a chicken in the first inning; players who reach safely in the second have to dance on the base; in the third inning, if a fan catches a foul ball, it’s an out; in the fourth inning a youth can be a fourth outfielder; fifth inning, players who strike out get a pie in the face; sixth inning, batter and pitcher will have a math problem contest. Others: players who get a hit will be high fived by the opposing team, manager eats a hot dog after every run opposing team scores, etc. You get the picture.
TWO IN TOP 20
The Silver Knights have two players in the top 20 in the FCBL in hitting: Will MacLean and Richie Paltridge.
MacLean, after his 4 for 4 night Saturday, is hitting .375 with two doubles and four RBIs, good for 13th. Paltridge, at .324, is 17th.
As for pitching, Nashua starter Brayden Clark (0-1) is eighth with a 1.69 ERA…
Nashua is sixth in team hitting at .237, and third in pitching at 3.86.
