After a rare Saturday in which they both enjoyed sweeps, the Rivier softball and baseball teams went 0 for 4 on Sunday with some close defeats
The Raider softball team was swept by Albertus Magnus in New Haven, Conn., 1-0 and 9-0, while the Riv baseball squad also suffered a one-run defeat in one game, bowing 3-2 in the nightcap and 7-2 in the opener of a doubleheader at St. Joseph’s of Maine.
Here’s a look:
SOFTBALL
It was a tough day for the Raider offense, with zero runs on just three hits combined in the two games.
Game 1 was a hard luck loss for the Raiders (12-20, 5-7 GNAC), as pitcher Nicole Verrette scattered seven hits but was burned by Janelle Franklin’s RBI single in the fifth. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem except the Raiders managed just one hit against Albertus hurler Erin Dighello, who walked two and fanned six. Verrette actually had Riv’s only hit.
In the five-inning nightcap, Riv gave up seven runs in the first inning and managed just two hits, by Verrette and Nicole Capra.
Riv pitchers Sydney Greeno, Verrette and Emma Langer gave up a combined nine hits while AM’s Skylar Arent went four innings for the win, giving up both Raider hits with one walk.
BASEBALL
At Standish, Me., the Raiders gave up a four-spot in the third to fall behind 5-1. Riv managed four hits and got an RBI double by Conor Dines. Frank Gulezan also had a double. Tim Scott gave up seven runs on seven hits and walked six over 4.2 innings to suffer the loss.
The Raiders suffered a tough one in Game 2, as the Monks got the game winner on a two-out error by Riv pitcher Jake Mainey (Merrimack) in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off. Mainey allowed just one earned run on eight hits over 6.2 innings.
The Raiders had seven hits, led by Patrick Young’s two hits and an RBI.Tyler Fenton had a hit and a RBI as well.
The Raiders (3-26, 2-14 GNAC) will host Emerson Thursday night at Holman Stadium at 7 as the season enters its final week.
