Rivier Roundup: Baseball no-hit while softball also swept
It was a lost weekend for the Rivier University baseball and softball teams.
Both were washed out on Saturday, and swept in doubleheaders on Sunday.
Even worse for Riv, the Raider baseball team was no-hit in the second game by the Anna Maria combo of Nick Choate and Jake Usenia.
Here’s the bad tidings:
SOFTBALL
LASELL SWEEPS RIVIER, 6-4, 9-3
In the opener, Rivier (6-16, 3-5 GNAC) trailed 4-1 after three and could never fully make up the ground. Nicole Capra had a great game going 3 for 4, including a homer, with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Sarah Frazier, Courtney Marioles, and Micayla Bourski each had two hits. Frazier also had an RBI.
Nicole Verrette had a tough time in the circle, giving up six runs on 12 hits over six innings.
The Raiders’ luck didn’t get any better in the nightcap, as they gave up nine unanswered runs after grabbing a 3-0 first inning lead. Capra had another great game, going 3 for 3 with a run scored, while Frazier, Marioles and Bourski each had two hits again. Marioles and Kayla Miles had RBIs.
Sydney Greeno took the loss, giving up nine runs (only five earned), on nine hits, walking four and fanning five. Despite their 10 hits, the Raiders committed three errors.
BASEBALL
ANNA MARIA SWEEPS, 13-0, 15-0
The Raiders were blanked twice at Marlborough (Mass.) High School, and in the no-hitter Choate tossed five innings with five strikeouts and Usenia two with two K’s. Neither hurler issued a walk.
The AMCATS pounded out 39 hits overall, but a whopping 25 in the second game as Riv fell to 1-19 overall, 0-8 in the GNAC.
Corey Cochran took the loss in Game 2, allowing seven runs over four innings. In the opener, the Raiders got three hits, one each by Jake Boudreau, Frank Gulezian and Cochran. Tim Scott took the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits over 6.2 innings, walking four but striking out six.
