Rivier Roundup: Softball ends streak, baseball not so fortunate

The good news for Rivier University athletics is the Raider softball team snapped a five-game losing streak to salvage a doubleheader split at Norwich
The bad news was the Raider baseball quad was three outs away from ending its own losing skid but couldn’t finish the job at Dean College, losing a twinbill to extend the Raiders slump to nine.
Here’s a look at the day’s events:
SOFTBALL
RAIDERS SPLIT WITH NORWICH
After dropping the opener 6-3, the Raiders dominated the nightcap for an 11-1 win, taking advantage of four Norwich errors for four unearned runs despite being outhit 8-7.
Sarah Frazier led the way, going 1 for 2 with four RBIs and three runs scored, providing the key blow in the nightcap with a grand slam in the fourth, expanding a 2-1 lead to 6-1 and the Raiders never looked back. Leadoff hitter Julia Daley also helpd out, going 2 for 4.
Sydney Greeno got the win in the circle for the 4-14 Raiders, giving up just one run on eight hits.
In the first game, the Raiders led 3-2 before giving up four Norwich runs in the bottom of the sixth. Josie Maggiore and Kayla Miles each had two hits while Frazier drove in two runs with a hit, giving her six RBIs on the day.
Two errors hurt the Raiders in the opener, as only one of the six runs given up by losing pitcher Nicole Verrette was earned.
Rivier is back in action Wednesday, hosting Anna Maria for two games beginning at 6 p.m.
BASEBALL
DEAN RALLIES FOR 6-2, 14-13 SWEEP
The Raiders led 13-8 and then gave up six runs combined in the sixth and seventh for the walk-off loss. Dean’s Ryan Gallagher, who came into the game as a defensive replacement, singled in the winning run after a throwing error plated the tying run.
The Raiders had eight hits in the second game, led by Jake Boudreau’s 3 for 5, two RBI effort. Max Chipman and Kevin Collins each drove in two runs without the benefit of a hit, while Corey Cochran went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Taking the loss on the mound was Merrimack’s Jake Mainey, as he gave up two runs on four hits over 1.1 innings.
In the opener, the Raiders trailed 2-0 after the first and 5-0 after five and couldn’t catch up, despite two hits and an RBI by Conor Dines. Five other Raiders had a hit apiece, the other being pinch-hitter Alex Currie, who also drove in a run with a double.
Devin Albino took the loss, giving up five runs on nine hits over five innings. Dean outhit Rivier 29-15 combined in the two games, garnering 17 hits in the second.
Now 1-16 overall, 0-6 in the GNAC, the Raiders are slated to host Springfield, as of now at Holman Stadium, on Thursday at 6 p.m.
