It had been a long two years, but the drought is finally over for the Rivier University baseball team.
The Raiders barely played in 2020 and had just 10 games last year due to the pandemic and went 0-10 but on Sunday they picked up that elusive win, 11-6, in the first game of a doubleheader against Lesley University at Austin Prep in Reading, Mass. It was also the first win for Louie Bernardini in his Rivier head coaching career.
The Raiders got a complete game from sophomore pitcher Tim Scott and picked up four runs in the fourth and five in the sixth, pounding out 12 hits overall and taking advantage of three Lesley errors.
The Raiders almost made it a sweep, leading 5-4 in the middle of the sixth in the nightcap, but gave up two runs to fall 6-5. The Raiders, who went 0-7 on their trip to Myrtle Beach, are now 1-8 on the season.
In their win, Patrick Young (Billerica, MA) and Conor Dines (Framingham, MA) led the Raiders offense with two hits along with two RBIs each. Dines even went deep for his first collegiate home run of his career.
Lesley was led by James Brandon, who tallied two hits in the game to bring in two of the team’s six runs. Scott struck out three while allowing all six runs over seven innings.
In the nightcap, the Raiders would go up 4-2 after four innings of play, thanks to a three spot in the third inning. But Lesley would rally back with a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go up 6-5.
Errors for Rivier allowed three unearned runs to cross the plate, ultimately giving the home team the win after the seven innings.
Corey Cochran of Salem would throw six innings allowing just nine hits and striking out four in the loss. Christian Rapoza came in in the sixth for Lesley to finish the game on the mound. He went two innings and only gave up two hits while striking out four to get the win for Lynx, now 6-8.
Six out of the nine Raiders hitters tallied a base hit. Zachary White would have the biggest hit for Riv in game two, hitting a solo shot and going 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Adam Budorick paced the Lynx, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Rivier baseball will be back in action next Saturday, with their home and conference opener scheduled against Norwich University. Games are currently set for 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Daniel Webster’s Harvey Woods Field.
