Iona halts UNH women’s lacrosse four-game win streak
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Senior captain Delaney Pratt (Lafayette, Colo.) and sophomore Mackenzie MacEachern of Bedford scored three goals apiece, but the University of New Hampshire women’s lacrosse team was defeated 18-11 by Iona College at Mazzella Field on Saturday afternoon.
MacEachern also had a career- and game-high eight draw controls as well as one caused turnover. Pratt finished with four draws.
Sophomore Kelsey MacCallum (Franklin, Mass.) and freshman Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) also tallied multiple points for the Wildcats. MacCallum finished with a goal and two assists for three points and Connerty had two assists for two points.
Freshman goalkeeper Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) was credited with 10 saves. Classmate Emma Magazu (Newtown, Conn.) tied for the lead among all players with three ground balls.
Iona was led offensively by Megan Collins (two goals, four assists), Kira Varada (4g, 1a) and Gabriele Thornton (3g, 1a). Sofia Votto made eight saves.
New Hampshire, which entered the game winners of four straight games, is now 5-4. Iona extended its winning streak to seven games to improve to 7-1.
Down 6-3 at the half, UNH scored four unanswered goals to grab a 7-6 lead but Iona got three straight to lead 9-7, and maintained that edge to lead 13-9 after three quarters.
New Hampshire returns to action March 26 for its America East conference opener vs. UMass Lowell. Start time at Wildcat Stadium is 1 p.m.
