Rivier Roundup: Men’s lacrosse gets lone Friday victory

Four Rivier University sports teams hit the playing field Friday from Nashua to South Carolina and Florida, but only one team came away a winner.

The Raider men’s lacrosse team toyed with Northern Vermont-Lyndon, 20-3, at Merrill Field to improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Raiders enjoyed a 10-0 lead after the first quarter and that was that. Michael Zapatka scored six goals with two assists for an eight point day, while Connor Eck added three goals and an assist. Other goal scorers for Riv included Michael Ference (two goals), with single tallied each by Nicholas Tavares, Jeff Potter (with two assists), Connor McGuire, Trevor Reilly,Alan Cozzolino, Coby Mercier (with two assists), Chris Heitmiller, and Sawyer Hall (with two assists).

Raider goalies Sam Tibbetts, Sawyer Gagnon and Ryan Palmer combined for nine saves. Riv is back in action Wednesday at Merrill Field vs. Mass Maritime.

BASEBALL

CLARK 24, RIVIER 1

The Raiders (0-6) tough trip in Myrtle Beach, S.C. continued as they were held to one hit, a single in the seventh by Frank Gulezian, who later scored on a throwing error.

Starter Michael Overlan took the loss for the Raiders, allowing five runs over 1.2 innings. Clark’s Ben Spencer tossed six innings of no-hit ball.

Riv wraps up its trip today with a doubleheader vs. Rochester beginning at 9 a.m.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

RAIDERS DROP A PAIR

The Rivier softball team dropped two games in Clermont,Fla. on Friday as its spring break trip to the sunshine state wrapped up at 0-6.

First, the Raiders fell in a five-inning contest to Concordia of Chicago 17-0. Then game two, they fell to Wentworth 3-2 in non-conference action.

In the Concordia loss, the Raiders were held to just two hits in the five innings. Alicia McKenna of Litchfield and Londonderry’s Sarah Frazier tallied the only two hits of the game.

In the loss to Wentworth, the Raiders quickly jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the first inning. Londonderry’s Kayla Miles would pick up the team’s first RBI of the day on a squeeze play to take the 1-0 lead. Josie Maggiore of North Hampton added an RBI single to right.

However, Erin Hancock, Wentworth’s pitcher, would settle in after the first inning and shut the Raiders out the rest of the game, giving her team a chance to come back and take the lead, which they did in the fifth on an an RBI triple by Kaitlin Pettenger, a sac fly and an error.

The Raiders will be back on the field on Saturday, March 19 when they take on Lesley in non-conference action on Raider Diamond at 1 and 3 p.m.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

ELMS 14, RIVIER 3

The Raiders got goals from Tara Saliany, Sarah Lachance and Rachel Hinkley in their conference opener but it wasn’t nearly enough as they fell to 1-2, 0-1 in the GNAC.

Elms (2-0, 1-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back, leading 10-1 at the half.

Riv hosts GNAC foe Saint Joseph’s of Maine on Tuesday night at 7 at Merrill Field.
