It wasn’t exactly fun in the sun, but it was a start.

The good news was the Rivier University baseball and softball teams were able to get out on the diamond and start the season on their respective southern trips, trips they didn’t have a year ago.

The bad news was they both fell on the wrong side of the scoreboard in their respective openers. The Raider baseball team got plenty of offense (11 hits) but fell 14-10 to Fredonia in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Rivier’s softball team dropped a 5-4 decision in eight innings to conference rival Saint Joseph’s of Maine, but in the warmth of Leesburg, Fla.

At Myrtle Beach, the Raiders had an 8-6 lead but gave up six runs in the eighth inning. The Raiders had five players with two hits apiece: Salem’s Corey Cochran, Frank Gulezian, Zach White, Cole Bekeritis, and Jake Boudreau. Cochran, White, Bekeritis and Boudreau each had two RBIs. Cochran had a triple and a homer.

Riv’s Michael Overlan took the loss in relief. Starter Devin Albino had a good outing, allowing three runs on six hits over 4.1 innings, with no walks and three strikeouts. The Raiders as a staff were around the plate as they walked only four.

In softball in the Florida sun, the Monks got the winning run on a sac fly in the bottom of the eighth by Olivia Howe with the frame starting with a runner on second for the walk off win.

Riv’s Nicole Verrette took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in four innings of relief, striking out three and walking just one.

Starter Sydney Greeno allowed three runs (one earned) over 3.1 innings.

Offensively, Josie Maggiore had three hits and an RBI to lead the Raiders, while Campbell alum Alicia McKenna of Litchfield had two hits and an RBI. Verrette and Londonderry’s Kayla Miles had the other RBIs for Riv.

The Raiders softball team was also scheduled to play RPI later Sunday. They face John Carroll and Alvernia today in Clermont, Fla. The Raider baseball team gets back at it today as well in Myrtle Beach with a doubleheader against Hilbert College.
