NASHUA — Lyric Grumblatt had a season to remember for the Rivier University women’s basketball team, and the rest of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference agreed.
Grumblatt, a sophomore academically at Riv but freshman athletically, not only was named the GNAC Rookie of the Year but also the conference Player of the Year.
Meanwhile, Raider men’s basketball standout Miles Gillette was named to the GNAC First Team.
As for Grumblatt, the former Manchester Memorial standout was a dominant force this season. She helped lead the Raiders to a 14-12 season and 9-8 in conference play. That was good enough to earn them the 6th seed in the GNAC playoffs.
Grumblatt ended the season ranked number one in the country in points per game with 26.5. On top of her 681 points this season, she also hauled in 211 rebounds, dished out 77 assists, and stole the ball 60 times.
After beating Anna Maria in the first round, they made it to the quarterfinals, where they fell to St. Joseph’s of Maine in the semis. Grumblatt broke numerous school records this season, with the biggest being points scored in a single season, previously held by her coach, Deanna Purcell.
“I told her when I recruited her that I expected her to break my records,” Purcell, the program’s all-time leading scorer, said. “And she’s broken three. … She’s on pace to score well more than I’ve scored.”
And as the nation’s top scorer to boot.
“That’s the last thing I thought would’ve happened,” Grumblatt said last week. “I just came here hoping to get some wins, and change this program, and that’s exactly what we’ve done. Anything else is icing on the cake for me.”
She got some pretty good icing.
Grumblatt scored 681 points, with the previous record being 628, held by Purcell. Grumblatt had 13 weekly awards this season between the GNAC and NEWBA. She had three Newcomer of the Week and two Player of the Week honors through NEWBA while earning eight total honors from the GNAC, with four Rookie of the Week and four Player of the Week. She now also holds the Raiders’ single game scoring mark and rookie points for a season record.
Also for the Raider women’s team, Ciera Clark was named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship team.
Meanwhile, Gillette had an excellent season for the Raiders, one of the best over the last 10 years. He helped lead the team to a 10-win season and make the GNAC playoffs. Gillette led the country in double-doubles this season with 21 out of his 25 games played.
He also ranks eighth in the nation in rebounds per game with 12.8. Overall, Gillette finished the season with 573 points, 321 rebounds, and 42 assists. He also won two Player of the Week honors through the conference for his performances this season.
