Rivier Roundup: Women’s hoop wins sixth straight, men’s hoop and hockey fall

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — The Rivier women’s basketball team won its sixth straight conference game Tuesday night, 64-44 over Norwich University thanks to 31 points from Lyric Grumblatt.
Manchester’s Grumblatt dominated the first quarter for the Raiders (11-10, 7-7 GNAC). She scored 15 of the team’s 19 points in the quarter, along with grabbing four rebounds. Overall, Grumblatt had 21 in the half, helping them take a 33-19 lead into the break.
The second half saw the Raiders reach their largest lead of 24 points. Playing a key role in the team’s second half success was Anna Stenger (Weare, NH), who scored 15 points in the fourth quarter alone.
Silas Bernier had the team high in scoring for the Cadets with 12 points. Haley Brewster put in a solid rebounding night as she pulled down 10 boards.
Grumblatt also had nine rebounds, and six assists. Stenger had 17 points to go along with her five rebounds.
Rivier closes out the regular season Saturday against JWU in GNAC action at 1 p.m.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
NORWICH 68, RIVIER 64
A tale of two halves for the Cadets (13-10, 8-7 GNAC) against the visiting Raiders. Rivier took an eight-point lead into the half at 31-23. The Raiders starting five combined for all of the team’s points, led by Miles Gillette (Washington, DC) with ten points and six rebounds.
The second half saw Rivier (8-13, 4-10 GNAC) reach their largest lead of 10 at the 15:06 mark. After that, the Cadets started to chip away and eventually took their first lead with 5:34 left in the game.
They never looked back and extended their lead to eight before the final buzzer. Donovan Lewis Jr played a key role in Norwich’s success in the second half, scoring 14 points.
Gillette finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Rivier will be back Thursday to take on Norwich again in the Muldoon Fitness Center at 7 p.m.
MEN’S HOCKEY
SUFFOLK 4, RIVIER 3 (OT)
The Rams would walk it off with just 28 seconds left in the overtime period on a goal by Troy Ladka in Charlestown, Mass.
After a scoreless first period, Rivier jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the second. Ashton Jones (South Lyon, MI) broke the scoreless game just 34 seconds into the period. Eight minutes later, while on a power play, the Raiders (5-15-2) would tack on one more from Colby Audette (Colchester, VT).
The Rams wouldn’t go away easily in the second as they would score two goals of their own to tie the game back up going into the second break. Alex Kolowrats scored first for Suffolk at the 12:01 mark on the power play. Then, Peter Nugent would score the game’s tying goal at 16:34.
Rivier would break the tie again at the 17:08 mark into the third period on a Nicolas Paolucci (Toronto, ON) goal.
Suffolk would again end the period by tying it up at three-all when John Garrity beat the Raider tender to send it into overtime.
Rivier will be back in action Friday against Albertus Magnus for the GNAC Commissioner’s Cup at the Olympia Ice Center in Springfield, Mass. at 5 p.m.
