Rivier Roundup: Gillette’s 32 leads men’s hoop; hockey teams bow

STANDISH, Me. — The Rivier University men’s basketball team worked its way back in the second half to overtake GNAC opponent Saint Joseph’s, 76-66, on Tuesday night thanks to 32 points from Miles Gillette.

The Raiders (7-11, 3-8 GNAC) worked their way back in the second half. St. Joe’s made eight late first half threes to give them an eight-point lead going into the locker room with the score at 37-29.

The second half was a Gillette show, with him putting up 21 points and 10 rebounds. However, Riv’s Joseph Buford (Charleston, S.C.) made the lead changing layup with just 7:12 to go. After that, the Raiders didn’t trail again. They outscored the hosting team 47-29 to pick up their third conference win.

Gillette also finished with 16 rebounds. Nesta Roberts (Manchester, Conn.) had the second highest scoring night with 12 points along with seven rebounds.

The Monks (5-14, 4-7 GNAC) made 15 three pointers throughout the contest. They hoisted up 47 attempts for a 31.9% three-point shooting percentage. Drew Shea and Teagan Hynes tied for the team high with 13 points each. Shea added seven rebounds to his stat line.

Rivier will be back at 3 p.m. Saturday against Anna Maria College in the Muldoon Center.

The Raiders win in men’s basketball was their lone win on the night as they went 0-3 in their other contests:

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

ST. JOE’S (Maine) 77, RIVIER 43

The Monks (14-3, 8-1 GNAC) took the lead right off the jump and never looked back. They hit their largest lead of the night at 39 points with 1:23 seconds remaining in the contest.

Former Hollis Brookline standout Cassandra Stapelfeld had the game high with 19 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Angelica Hurley had 17 points for her squad with nine rebounds.

Rivier (6-11, 2-8 GNAC) had two score in the double digits. Anna Stenger (Weare, NH) and Jessica Carrier. Stenger had the team high with 13 points. Carrier had 10 points and seven rebounds from the points guard position.

MEN’S HOCKEY

ALBERTUS MAGNUS 7, RIVIER 4

The Falcons (13-5-1),jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first period. All four goals were scored by different Albertus student-athletes.

The second period was the most productive for the Raiders as they outscored Albertus 3-2 to get the overall score of 6-3.

Rivier (4-12-2) broke the 4-0 AMC run with an Ashton Jones (South Lyon, MI) goal. The Falcons would add their two next from Colt Corpse and Charles Risk. The Raiders would end the period on a 2-0 run, with both goals coming for Tyler Duderstadt (Sewickley, PA). His second goal of the period was on a power play.

The third only saw two goals, both coming via the power play by each team. Milan Breczko (Klasterec, CZR) would strike last for the Raiders right after Alex Gagnon’s second goal of the day for Albertus.

Rivier men’s hockey is back Friday when they travel to Stonehill for a 7 p.m. game.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

NICHOLS 8, RIVIER 1

The Bison (10-7-1) got up early and piled on throughout the contest. Their largest output period was the third, where they found the back of the net five times. Lauren Rokala and Alicia Hunks led the team in scoring, with both scoring two goals.

The Raiders (1-11-2) would notch one on the scoreboard at the 9:39 mark in the third period off Ellie Grady’s stick.

Rachel Hinkley (Swedesboro, NJ) made 49 saves in the contest.
