Saturday was a tough day for Rivier University teams as men’s and women’s basketball fell — the Raider women in overtime — and men’s volleyball’s first match in almost two years resulted in a loss to MIT.
Here’s a look:
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
MIT 3, RIVIER 0
The Raiders would jump out to a lead in the first two sets in their season opener at the Muldoon Fitness Center but fell 25-23, 26-24, 25-18 as errors would allow the Engineers to go on a few runs to get back into each set. Overall, the Raiders had 21 errors to MIT’s 10.
Rivier beat the Engineers out in kills (34-32), assists (32-31), and digs (27-23) this evening. David Smith (Clinton, OH) and Jack Normandin (Clifton Park, NY) put together solid performances. Smith had a game high 15 kills, with Normandin just one shy at 14.
MIT had two past the 10 kill mark as well in Jack Yurkanin and Grant Oh. Yurkanin had 14 kills, and Oh had 10.
Rivier begins GNAC play on Thursday at Elms at 7:30 p.m.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
ST. JOE’S (Conn.) 84, RIVIER 54
Tyree Mitchell (18 points), Jordan Powell (17 points and 13 rebounds), and Tyshawn Jackson (14 points, five steals) helped turn a nine-point halftime lead into a rout for the visiting Blue Jays (13-0, 8-0 GNAC), ranked No. 8 in D3 Hoops Top 25.
For the Raiders, Miles Gillette put up the game high with 20 points and nine rebounds. Pharaoh Davis was the second most productive player with 10 points.
Rivier (6-9, 2-6) is at Regis College on Monday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
LASELL 85, RIVIER 70 (OT)
After a Laser lead at the half, the Raiders made their way back with a big fourth quarter. They would outscore Lasell 19-13 to tie the game up and send it into overtime.
Lasell would bounce back from regulation and put up 22 points in overtime, giving them their biggest lead of the night at 15 points, ruining a 37-point night by Rivier’s Lyric Grumblatt.
Meg Carroll would be the top scorer for the Lasers with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Brooke Damboise would finish just behind her with 19 points.
Rivier’s Cydney Lessard finished with 14 points.
Rivier, now 6-8 (2-5 GNAC) next faces Emmanuel on Wednesday.
