NASHUA — Former Hollis Brookline standout Cassandra Stapelfeld was back in the area on Thursday night, much to the chagrin of a local team.
Stapelfeld led Saint Joseph’s of Maine with 17 points as the Monks downed Rivier University, 74-59, at the Muldoon Center.
It was a tough day for Raider basketball as the Raider men also fell to Saint Joe’s in the early game, 76-66.
In the nightcap, the Raider women came out firing in the first half as they kept up with the Monks, down only four at the half.
However, Rivier would struggle in the second half as the Raiders compiled 20 turnovers throughout the game and scored just nine points in the third quarter. They did best the Monks in the fourth, outscoring them 16-15, but with a 21 point third for St. Joe’s, the damage was already done.
Kaleigh Walsh was just behind her with 15 points for the Monks while the Raiders Alexa Dufries tied Stapelfeld with the game high of 17 along with four steals. Lyric Grumblatt came on late, scoring 14 points with five rebounds.
The Monks are now 11-1 overall, 5-0 in the GNAC, while Riv fell to 4-6, 9-3 in GNAC play.
SAINT JOE’S MEN 76, RIVIER 66
The first half differential made all the difference in the game’s outcome. The Monks took a 41-30 lead into the half. The Raiders won the second half 36-35 but couldn’t chip away at the deficit.
St. Joe’s was paced by Nicholas Curtis, who scored a game high 23 points to go along with six rebounds. Griffin Foley was another top performer for the Monks after scoring 18 points and six rebounds.
For the Raiders, Nikolas Pignone and Miles Gillette tied for top scorers with 20 apiece. Gillette completed another double-double with 14 rebounds.
Rivier (3-6, 0-3) is at Dean College on Saturday.
