Tough Saturday for UNH hockey as both Wildcat teams fall

DURHAM – Freshman Kira Juodikis (LaSalle, Ontario) scored two goals but the University of New Hampshire women’s hockey team was defeated 6-3 by the University of Vermont on Saturday afternoon at the Whittemore Center.

Meanwhile, in the nightcap Saturday, the UNH men fell to Boston University, 2-1 in overtime.

In the afternoon game, sophomore Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario) scored the Wildcats’ other goal and junior Tamara Thierus () matched her career high of two assists.

Senior goalie and captain Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) recorded 28 saves. She also posted a higher save percentage (.848) than Vermont’s Blanka Skodova, who posted (.800) with 12 saves and three goals allowed.

UNH drops to 6-9-2 overall and 4-8-1 in Hockey East while Vermont improves to 8-7-2 overall and 5-4-1 in Hockey East.

With the score tied 2-2 in the second period, UVM’s Lily Murphy got the puck on a breakaway and got her own deflection off Boutilier and deposited the puck in the net for the 3-2 lead at 12:17.

Vermont scored again less than a minute later — at 13:14 – on a goal by Maddy Skelton in the top right corner to give them a two-goal lead.

At 9:06, Kelly shot the puck into the top-right corner for a UNH goal. She was assisted by sophomore Charli Kettyle and junior Jada Christian to lift the Wildcats within 4-3.

A scrum at the front of the net led to Theresa Schafzahl lifting the puck in the top of the net to extend the advantage to 5-3 at10:23 .

At 18:35, Kristina Shanahan scored an empty-net goal after a pass from Poulin-Labelle .

New Hampshire plays Penn State next Thursday, Dec. 9 (6 p.m.) for the first of a two-game series at the Whittemore Center.

MEN’S HOCKEY

BU 2, UNH 1 (OT)

Max Kaufman scored the game-winning goal with 13.9 seconds remaining in overtime for Boston University.

The Wildcats fall to 7-9-1 (3-7-1 Hockey East), while the Terriers improve to 6-9-2 (5-5-2 Hockey East).

At 10:36 of the second period, Matt Brown scored for the Terriers on a two-man advantage power play goal. Brown lifted a wrist shot into the upper stick side of the net from the right face-off circle to take a 1-0 lead for BU.

The Wildcats tied the game 1-1 at 12:53 of the third period as freshman left wing Liam Devlin (Needham, Mass.) fired a one-timer into the lower stick side of the goal from the slot. Freshman defensemen Colton Huard (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and senior defensemen Will MacKinnon (Plymouth, Mich.) both posted an assist on this goal.

The Wildcats won’t return to action until the Ledyard Classic at Thompson Arena in Hanover on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 30-31. UNH will take on Dartmouth at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and then either Boston College or Mercyhurst on Friday.

The Wildcats return to the Whitt on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 7-8. UNH will play St. Lawrence on Friday at 7 p.m. and then Clarkson on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
