SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario), Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec) and Maddie Truax (Gardner, Mass.) all recorded a goal and an assist to lead the University of New Hampshire women’s hockey team to Saturday afternoon’s 4-1 victory against Union College at Messa Rink.

Senior goalie and captain Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) recorded 26 saves, including 10 in the second period.

Union goalie Sophie Matsoukas, in her third start of the season, was credited with 20 saves.

UNH moves to 4-8-2 while Union is now 2-13-1. New Hampshire begins a four-game homestand at the Whittemore Center with a two-game series against the University of Vermont on Dec. 3-4.

Both teams netted a goal in the second period as Union had the 11-7 shot advantage.

Union recorded a 9-8 shot advantage in the third period, but it was the Wildcats who stored all three goals in the final frame.

Thiérus jammed the puck into the cage at the front doorstep just 11 seconds into the third period to put the ‘Cats back in front, 2-1.

Brooks extended the advantage to 3-1 on a shot from the inner-left circle. Thiérus initiated the sequence with a pass through the neutral zone. Truax, who had just exited the penalty box, corralled the puck at the blue line and fed a pass ahead to Brooks for the goal.

Truax netted an unassisted goal at 14:16 to push the lead to 4-1. Truter fed the puck to Martin and the right doorstep and her shot was stopped by Matsoukas. A Dutchwomen skater cleared the puck from the crease, but Truax kept the puck in the zone at the right point and fired a shot through traffic into the upper-right corner.

MEN’S HOCKEY

UNH 3, HOLY CROSS 2 (OT)

Senior forward Filip Engarås (Stockholm, Sweden) notched his fourth goal of the season with 49.3 seconds left in overtime to lift the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team to a 3-2 victory on Saturday night against Holy Cross at the Whittemore Center in Durham.

The Wildcats improve to .500 for the first time this season with a 7-7-1 overall mark after their third consecutive victory, while the Crusaders drop to 3-12-1 overall.

“It wasn’t perfect, it wasn’t pretty, you have to give Holy Cross a lot of credit, obviously I thought they battled hard, they played right until the end,” said UNH head coach Mike Souza. “I didn’t think we were as detailed we had been, at times we made the game difficult on ourselves, but a win is a win. You win a weekend, as we talked about in college hockey you have to win weekends and we found a way to get a win in overtime with a big time play by Filip.”

Holy Cross tied the game on an extra attacker goal with their goalie pulled with two minutes left in the third period on a goal by Bobby Young, which was his first tally of the season.

Senior goaltender Mike Robinson of Bedford stopped 20 shots in his fifth win of the season for the Wildcats, while Matt Radomsky tallied 24 saves to fall to 2-6-1 in net for Holy Cross.

Senior forward Tyler Ward’s (Kamloops, British Columbia) power play goal gave the ‘Cats the 2-1 lead in the second stanza at 9:29.

Lucas Thorne opened the scoring in the game at 1:41 of the first period, but the ‘Cats tied it less than six minutes later on freshman forward Will Margel’s (Potomac, Md.) first collegiate tally in a Wildcat uniform.

UMASS LOWELL 2, MAINE 0

A 29-save shutout from senior Owen Savory (Cambridge, Ontario) pushed the No. 15 River Hawks (8-2-2, 6-1-0 Hockey East) over Maine (1-10-2, 1-7-1 HEA) at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine.

With the win, Savory registered his third shutout of the season and ninth of his career and now owns the top save percentage (.954) and goals against average (1.10) in the conference. Additionally, Savory leads the country in save percentage and sits in second overall in GAA behind Quinnipiac’s Yaniv Perets (1.06).

In the scoring column for the River Hawks, juniors Blake Wells (Blackie, Alberta) and Ryan Brushett (Montreal, Quebec) each logged a goal in the shutout
