Freshman’s goal not enough as UNH falls to Northeastern

By UNH Athletic Communications - | Nov 6, 2021

DURHAM – Freshman defenseman Colton Huard (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) scored his first collegiate goal, but the Huskies went on to score four unanswered goals as the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team fell to Northeastern, 4-1 on Friday night at the Whittemore Center. Jakov Novak led the Huskies with two goals.

The Wildcats fall to 3-5-0 (1-3-0 Hockey East), while the Huskies improve to 6-3-0 (3-2-0 Hockey East).

The Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead when Huard received a pass from freshman forward Will Margel (Potomac, Md.) and wristed a shot from the high slot that went past Northeastern’s goaltender Devon Levi’s high blocker side just 1:44 into the first. Junior forward Harrison Blaisdell (Regina, Saskatchewan) also assisted on the goal.

Northeastern tied the game at 1-1 at 2:27 into the second period when Novak finished a rebound upstairs over a stretched out UNH junior goalie David Fessenden (Parker, Colo.). The goal was assisted by Riley Hughes and Jack Hughes.

Ryan St. Louis put the Huskies up 2-1 with only 1:49 left in the second period when the puck found his stick after a battle in front of the net and he roofed it to the back of the goal. Justin Hryckowian and Matt Demelis posted the assists on the goal.

Novak caught a backdoor pass from Jordan Harris at 12:53 into the third period for his second goal of the game and extended Northeastern’s lead to 3-1.

The Huskies added to their lead to make the score 4-1 just 1:29 after Novak’s goal when Aidan McDonough buried a shot from in front of net after receiving a pass from behind the goal from Matt Demelis.

The Wildcats will travel to Boston today for a 7:30 p.m. game at Matthews Arena to conclude the series with Northeastern.
