PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rivier women’s volleyball team picked up a huge 3-0 win against top conference opponent Johnson & Wales on Wednesday, with head coach Craig Kolek picking up his 1,000th career win.
The Raiders continue to roll in conference play as they’re now 11-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, 14-5 overall. Rivier found its offensive production through Sydney Racevicius (Woodbury, Conn.) and Lily Blodget (Dunstable, Mass.).
Avery Pollard (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) must have been setting very well as Racevicius and Blodgett only had five errors combined. Each hitter tallied ten kills, with Racevicius getting a match high of four service aces. Pollard fell just shy of 30 assists with 29.
Sofia Pawlusik (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) was back on top of the defense with ten digs.
The Wildcats offense was led by Peyton Oliver, who ended the match with eight kills. Savannah Cambell was the setter for JWU tallying 12 assists.
The volleyball win highlighted a busy day for Rivier teams. Here’s a look at the other Raider results:
MEN’S SOCCER
NORWICH 3, RIVIER 0
The Raiders were able to stave off the potent Cadet offense through the first half. Norwich tallied plenty of shots through the half but never got a clean look through the solid Riv defense.
The second half, however, is where the Raiders (3-11, 1-9 GNAC) couldn’t hold off any longer. Norwich (12-2, 9-1) was able to put up three goals in the half, starting in the 57th minute when Albert Baraka broke the 0-0 tie with a solid left foot from outside the 18. Amerle Nemeye netted the second score in the 64th minute directly from a corner kick. Joseph Thongsythavong ended the evening scoring in the 76th minute of the game.
Raider keeper Dominic Cunha (Peabody, Mass.) saw 12 shots tonight, where he saved nine of them. Riv hosts Regis Saturday at 11 a.m.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
RIVIER 0, DEAN 0
Throughout the entire first half, the Raiders (2-12, 0-9-2 GNAC) maintained possession over 80% of the time. In the half, Rivier put up ten shots and nearly scored numerous times. Haley Gaunt had a perfect day in net for the Bulldogs, saving all 11 shots she faced.
The second half was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. Dean’s offense came alive in the half, putting up their nine shots. Emily Mikelson of Concord was awarded the draw after coming into the game in the second half. She saw three shots on net and saved all of them.
The overtime period almost ended in the first 15 seconds on a play where Dean’s Rachael Amatruda beat Mikelson, but her shot was just wide enough to catch the post. No one else would come close enough to end the game.
COLBY-SAWYER 1, RIVIER 0
The Raiders lost their three game win streak with a tough loss to the Chargers as Julia Lanctot’s goal in the first quarter was all Colby-Sawyer needed.
Rivier keeper Katie Olsen (Saugus, Mass.) kept them within striking distance with a nine save contest. The Raiders are 6-7 overall, 5-4 GNAC.
