Nashua, Hudson, Merrimack set for Junior Legion tourney
Another chance?
Nashua James E. Coffey Post #3 didn’t capture a state title at the Senior American Legion baseball level, but perhaps once could come from the Nashua Junior Legion Team.
The Coffeys had a stellar regular season and will begin the Junior State Tournament at Manchester’s Gill Stadium as the top seed from District A, having enjoyed a stellar 15-1 regular season. It’s only district loss was to Berlin way back on June 13.
Unlike the Senior Tourney when Nashua was the only local, both the Merrimack Post 98 and Hudson Post 48 Junior teams made it. Merrimack got in as District A’s fourth and final seed via tiebreakers vs. Lebanon, both teams finishing 6-11. In District B, Hudson was the second seed at 11-7.
Merrimack will face District B top seed Exeter this morning at 10 a.m., while Hudson faces District A third seed Keene at 12:30 p.m. Nashua won’t play until 6 p.m. vs. District B fourth seed Newmarket. Play continues Saturday, Sunday and Monday with the finals on Tuesday.
Nashua is managed by Jeff Lunn, brother of Senior Coffey Post manager Tim Lunn. Bishop Guertin infielder Luke Anderson, and Nashua South infielder Jake O’Connor
Hudson has, ironically, some Nashua South players on its roster as well, including infielder Hunter Ward, catchers Caleb Rich and Sam Murray, and pitcher-outfielder Nick Shaw. The 48ers are managed by Jay Spooner.
The event, like the Senior Tourney, is double elimination with the finals on Tuesday at 4 p.m., and, if necessary, 6:30 p.m.
There is no Junior Legion World Series but there is a Northeast Regional, which the winner will advance to, taking place August 13-15 in West Haverstraw, N.Y., at Pecks Pond Park. It was originally slated for Utica, N.Y. but was recently moved due to hotel issues.
