NASHUA – Another former Nashua Silver Knight joined an exclusive club: Major League draft choice.
Cody Morissette, who played for Nashua in 2018, was drafted in the second round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on Tuesday, No. 52 overall.
He’s the second highest pick for a former Silver Knight, that top honor going to Chris Shaw back in 2015 when the San Francisco Giants drafted him in the first round.
It was pretty expected that Morissette would be a high pick, after a stellar three seasons at Boston College, where he’s a junior. The Exeter native played in the Cape Cod League in 2019 and rejoined the FCBL last summer, playing with the North Shore Navigators after the Cape League cancelled due to the pandemic.
Morissette was No. 59 on the Top 250 Draft Prospects list. With Nashua in 2018 he hit .310, and was a Futures League All-Star.
Besides playing for the Silver Knights, he has other Nashua ties. He’s the son of former longtime Rivier University head men’s basketball coach Dave Morissette.
“There’s no better feeling than watching your big bro achieve his biggest dream,” Morissette’s younger brother, Josh, said on social media. “Miami kid now. Congrats.”
TONIGHT’S NASHUA ALL-STARS
Eight Nashua Silver Knights were named to participate in tonight’s game at New Britain Stadium.
Leading the way for Nashua are pitchers Aidan Crowley and Ryan Hohmann, plus infielder Brandon Fish of Londonderry.
The teams were divided into East and West. Players from Nashua, Brockton, Norwich and Worcester make up the East team while the West squad has players from host New Britain, Pittsfield, Vermont and Westfield.
Nashua pitchers selected overall include starter Crowley (Boston College) plus relievers Ryan Murphy (Maryland), Ryan Hohmann (Salve Regina) and Gabe Driscoll (Binghamton).
Position players are catcher Greg Bozzo (Northeastern), plus infielders Fish of Londonderry (Hartford) and Goffstown’s Connor Hujsak (Virginia Commonwealth), along with outfielder Logan Ott, also from the University of Maryland.
JACKSON DERBY
If you enjoyed the Home Run Derby held on Sunday to decide the Nashua-Westfield game at Holman Stadium, more so than one Nashua had last year at Holman to decide a game, you can thank Knights manager Kyle Jackson.
Jackson suggested in the off season that the league ditch the three minute clock for rounds and use a max 10 outs to decide the first round; seven outs were used for the second.
“I like it better this way,” Jackson said. “I brought it to attention in the off-season. It just got too hectic with the three minutes. It’s tough for the umpires to control how fast, or how quick the pitch is, and do signs and stuff like that.
“It was really simple to do 10 outs. That way the kids can enjoy it, and you’re not rushed. And the fans can enjoy it. And the scoreboard can keep track of outs, and runs, and things like that.”
Connor Hujsak took advantage, being selective and hit three straight in each round with one out left.
“That’s the cool thing,” Jackson said. “The hitters can now take their time. Wait for a pitch. And I think it was quicker too.”
GUARINO IMPROVING
Silver Knights lefty starter Nick Guarino, looked back on track after six scoreless innings Sunday, lowering his ERA to 4.44, with a 1-2 mark.
Guarino revealed that when joined the team to pitch Opening Night, he wasn’t completely healthy.
“I came up here hurt in the spring, some arm stuff,” Guarino said. “The slider was working, that was a big key for me (Sunday). I’ve been working with (pitching coach Ariel) Ramos. The arm feels good now.”
