Guertin boys, girls lacrosse teams considered favorites

They could have a big lacrosse celebration on Lund Road.

But, of course, they have to play the games, first, and in high school sports anything can happen.

Still, the Bishop Guertin boys and girls lacrosse teams have to be considered the favorites going into the start of the state tournaments this week.

The Cardinal boys have been dominant, handling the next-best contenders Exeter, Pinkerton and Bedford twice each.

The BG girls have bested Bedford, seemingly the next toughest team in Division I, twice. But both were fairly close.

Meanwhile, it’s been a good spring for Hollis Brookline in boys and girls Division II, and the Campbell boys have been strong in Division III.

Let’s take a look:

BOYS DIVISION I

It’s really a tough situation for anyone not in Green and Gold, as the Cardinals, led by Dawson Clark and so many other experienced, college-bound players, are just head and shoulders above the rest.

They have to face struggling Nashua North in a play-in next Thursday, and assuming there’s no colossal upset, they would then face Nashua South, led by Jaden Murphy and Drew Fleury, next Saturday in the quarters at 11 a.m. at Stellos.

“We played them twice, the first time we did OK (16-3), but the second time (21-5) we didn’t play well at all,” South coach Bill Monsen said. “I know our backs are up against it.”

The way the tourney is set up, it could be BG-Pinkerton again in a final; the Cards semifinal opponent could be Bedford in Region 2. Souhegan plays Concord in a play-in game (winner to face the Bulldogs) and in Region 3, Merrimack has a play-in with Dover on Thursday, winner to face perhaps the biggest contender for BG this year, Exeter, in the quarters.

The intrigue is who will it be, Exeter or the Astros. The Blue Hawks beat Pinkerton twice, both close, 12-10 and 9-7.

THE PICK: Guertin over Exeter.

BOYS DIVISION II

Hollis Brookline is the best local here, going 9-1 entering the final week of the season – and that loss was to Division I Souhegan.

Yet, the Hat said they have to head to Windham on Memorial Day for a play-in vs. Windham, and the Jags were 9-6 going into the final week, so no gimme.

The winner then would head to Keene for the prelims, while struggling Alvirne will host Timberlane in the prelims.

Kingswood is tough potential semis match-up, while Derryfield is the other strong team. Have a feeling about the Cavs, though.

THE PICK: Derryfield over HB.

BOYS DIVISION III

Wow, look at what coach/AD Josh Knight has done for the Campbell Cougars. They lost their first two, and then took off for 11 straight by late this past week. The Jack Noury-led team takes on Trinity, which it has beaten twice, in a prelim, and Milford takes on Pelham in the same region. So, it could be an all-local regional final.

After that? Plymouth is the toughest team in the division, it seems, so that’s a potential final.

THE PICK: Campbell over Plymouth.

GIRLS DIVISION I

Oh, this was all definitely a random draw as Bishop Guertin (15-0) is the bottom seed of Region Four, but will play Nashua South, which has had a good season paced by Olivia Johnson and frosh Ella Benzekri, in the first round on Monday at 10 a.m.

This is Guertin’s title to lose, but that certainly could happen as Bedford gave the Cards trouble in both meetings – jumping out to a 3-0 lead in what was a 15-8 BG win and then rallying late in a 9-6 game. But this Cardinal team, led by junior scorer Rylee Bouvier and senior Lindsay Hult, is title or bust.

“We’re feeling optimistic and pleased,” Cards coach Leslie Why said. “Our players have stayed focused on the process of growth and improvement, while our coaching staff has continued to learn how to better utilize and leverage our deep bench.”

North hosts Keene-Monadnock at 1, and the Titans have had a good, competitive year as well, with players such as Kiley O’Brien keeping things steady. But BG will be tough out in a regional final on Wednesday.

And then? Well, the way the regions are matched up, it could be Bedford in the semis – but Souhegan, also in Region 2, led by Abby Hawkes & Co., can certainly challenge the Bulldogs. The Sabers face Bedford at 5 on Monday at home. In Region 3, Merrimack hosts Dover in a prelim Monday that it looks wide open. But the Astros of Pinkerton may be BG’s ultimate final foe, and BG has 17-5 and 11-5 wins.

THE PICK: BG over Pinkerton.

GIRLS DIVISION II

In Region 2, it’s an all-local match-up this Wednesday with Alvirne hosting Hollis Brookline, winner to face Windham or Timberlane in quarters June 5.

When we last saw the Cavs in the postseason, they were in the semis in 2019. To get there again, the team, led by Alyssa Hill and Abie Ogren, among others, will have to get past long-standing rival Windham, which beat HB 12-8 in early May.

The Broncos have been led by Maddi Nicolosi and Haily Ramohlinho, and are still feeling their way in the sport, and the Cavs have a 14-3 win over them.

THE PICK: Windham over Portsmouth.

DIVISION III

Campbell is at Trinity (7 p.m.) and Milford hosts Pelham (5 p.m.) in first-round Region 1 games on Monday; the Cougars and Pioneers had a playoff preview this past week just after this writing. It’d be great to see an all-local region final, but Pelham looks like the favorite.

The Cougars have made huge strides since the start of the season that was against out-of-division teams; players like Bailey Bourque and Jose Oberto have led the way.

St. Thomas, Lebanon and Pelham appear to be the division’s strength.

THE PICK: St. Thomas over Plymouth.
