Raiders can’t take advantage of that Holman cooking

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Apr 19, 2021

NASHUA – Home cooking didn’t help the Rivier University baseball team.

A day after being swept at St. Joseph’s of Maine, the Raiders returned home to Holman Stadium Sunday and were beaten twice by Anna Maria, 22-4 and 13-1.

Defense was a problem for the Raiders, as they committed 12 errors on the day.

In the opener, the 0-8 Raiders allowed a whopping 17 first inning runs, and that was that. Anna Maria (12-6 overall, 4-2 GNAC) pounded out 18 hits overall, but that wasn’t the problem. Of the 22 runs, only five were earned thanks to eight Raider errors. Starter Corey Cochran, one of five Riv pitchers, took the loss.

Pat Quinn and Alex Currie each went 1 for 3 with an RBI in Game One, Cochran and Fred Kozalski had the other two hits for the Raiders. Jarrod Marlflote drove in four for AM.

In the seven-inning nightcap, the Raiders were done in by a four-run first and five-run sixth. Merrimack’s Jake Mainey took the loss, giving up nine runs over five innings.

Riv’s lone run came in the sixth when Devin Albino stole home on a double steal. Cochran and Alex Currie each had two hits for the Raiders in the nightcap.

Noah Holland led Anna Maria’s 17-hit attack in the second game, going 4 for 5 with two RBIs. AM pitcher Jake Usenia got the win, going five innings, giving up six hits, striking out seven.

The Raiders will next seek that first win on Thursday at Holman vs. Fisher College at 7 p.m. As per GNAC and Rivier pandemic policy, no spectators will be allowed.
