Pair of former Nashua lax standouts help St. Joe’s top Rivier

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Apr 8, 2021

NASHUA — A pair of locals helped beat a local team on Wednesday night.

Nashua South alum Shane Puelo scored a key fourth quarter go-ahead goal and assisted on the game-winner in overtime as St. Joseph’s of Maine edged the Rivier University men’s lacrosse team, 16-15 Wednesday night at Merrill Field.

Puelo led the Monks with five goals and five assists, but right there with him was teammate and Nashua North alum, Brendan Martin. Martin had three goals with an assist.

They teamed up to overshadow a great scoring night by Raider Michael Ference, who had six goals and three assists. Freshman Connor Eck added three goals and an assist on Dylan McSparren’s game-tying goal with seven seconds left in regulation.

However, the Monks’ Zavier Balzano got the game-winner at the 19 second mark of OT to lift the Monks to 5-3 while Rivier fell to 2-2. The Raiders actually led 13-10 after a Max Kelley goal with just over eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter but the Monks came storming back.

Ben Fitzpatrick and Sawyer Gagnon combined for 12 saves for the Raiders, who visit Anna Maria on Saturday.
