Today’s UNH football game at Rhode Island postponed

DURHAM – They waited a long, long time to play a game – 468 days to be precise – and when they finally did, the Wildcats of the University of New Hampshire football team did not much like how things turned out.
Little did head coach Sean McDonnell’s team know when it dropped the opener to its first spring season ever to the University at Albany on March 5 in Wildcat Stadium that it would be in for another long wait before it got a second chance to play.
And now that wait gets even longer.
Today’s scheduled game for the Wildcats at the University of Rhode Island has been postponed, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) announced on Friday,
“due to COVID-related protocols within the New Hampshire program.”
A decision on rescheduling the game will be made at a later date, the CAA statement said.
UNH has two scheduled regular season games remaining in the spring. The Wildcats are slated to play Stony Brook at home in Wildcat Stadium on Saturday, April 10 at noon and then close out with a game at Maine on Saturday, April 17 at 2 p.m.
They had a bye week after the Albany opener and then had games vs. Delaware March 20 and at Villanova last weekend postponed due to UNH COVID issues. All the CAA announcements for these postponements say a decision whether or not to reschedule “will be made at a later date” and those decisions have yet to be made. But time is running out, obviously, and one would think there’s no way all three games will be played.
“We got that first taste vs. Albany and obviously it wasn’t a good one,” said senior center Matt Mascia. “It’s something that left us wanting more.”
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, that taste remains, and one wonders whether they will play again this spring at all.
