Road not kind to UNH women’s soccer, field hockey teams

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior goalkeeper Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y.) recorded a career-high nine saves as University of New Hampshire women’s soccer fell 1-0 to Binghamton University at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Sheppard made six of her personal-best nine saves in the first half.

Binghamton got on the board in the 59th minute when Stefania Piantadosi snuck the ball past Sheppard along the near side post. This proved to be the game-winner for the Bearcats.

Binghamton goalkeeper Haylee Poltorak recorded three saves for the shutout.

The Wildcats fall to 5-2-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in America East contests. The Bearcats improve to 2-1-0 both overall and in conference play.

UNH is scheduled to return to action Friday, April 9 (2 p.m.) at home against Stony Brook.

FIELD HOCKEY FALLS AT MAINE

Sophomore goalkeeper Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) made a career-high 11 saves, but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was upended 4-2 by the University of Maine on Sunday afternoon at the UMaine Field Hockey Turf.

Woods, who exited the game briefly in the second quarter when a shot struck above her leg pads, made eight of her 11 saves in the third quarter. She allowed three goals in 52:59. Redshirt freshman Nikki Tredwell (Hampton, N.H.) made one save and yielded one goal in her 7:01 relief appearance.

Sophomore Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) scored both UNH goals and captain Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) was credited with an assist.

Maine’s Chloe Walton scored twice and goalie Mia Borley was credited with three saves.

UNH is 4-4 overall and 1-3 in America East, and is scheduled to play at the University of Vermont on April 3 (3 p.m.). Maine improved to 4-2, 4-0.
