DURHAM – Hudson’s Amanda Torres hit the go-ahead baseline jumper with 13 seconds left to highlight a game-ending 7-0 run that propelled the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team past Stony Brook, 52-49, in Saturday afternoon’s America East game at Lundholm Gym.

Meanwhile, the UNH men’s hoop team made it a sweep, 81-64, in Stony Brook, N.Y. Qon Murphy (Charlotte, N.C.) exploded for a career-high 24 points to lead four double-digit scorers as the Wildcats outscored Stony Brook 52-30 after halftime at Island Federal Credit Union Arena.

But the women’s game back at home had al the drama. With the Wildcats (4-8, 4-5 America East) trailing 49-48 and the shot clock nearing expiration, Torres scored the final two of her team-leading 15 points on a floater off one foot from the right baseline. Torres went 5-for-10 from the field, including 3 of 4 beyond the arc and 2-for-2 at the FT line.

UNH went 14-for-14 from the free throw line -led by an 8-for-8 performance from Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass. / 12 points, three rebounds, career-high three steals)– and connected on 8 of 19 shots (42.1 percent) from 3-point distance to offset SBU’s advantages in points in the paint (18-8) and points off turnovers (13-8).

Paige Cote (Sanford, Maine) scored a career-high 10 points, and Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) added seven points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Stony Brook (5-4, 3-2 AE) missed three consecutive shots in the closing seconds before Brooke Kane (Derry, N.H. / six points, five rebounds) grabbed a key defensive rebound and, following a foul, Adara Groman (Hopkinton, Mass. / two points, five rebounds, two assists) hit two free throws to provide the final margin.

Anastasia Warren scored a game-high 19 points for the Seawolves.

The same two teams meet Sunday at 1 p.m. (ESPN3) in Lundholm Gym.

The Seawolves, up 40-39 after three, bumped the lead to 45-39 with 6:42 left after a Warren 3 and a Pagan fast-break bucket.

A Torres 3 sliced it to 45-42 before Pagan’s putback increased SBU’s lead to five with 3:19 remaining.

Delaruelle and Cote each drained 3-pointers sandwiched around a Pagan layup to cut the Seawolves’ lead to 49-48 with 2:04 left.

Cote’s triple jump-started UNH’s decisive 7-0 run.

MURPHY’S HELPS MEN GET TO 5-5

Murphy went 7 of 14 from the field, which included 4-for-7 from 3-point range, and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line as UNH upped its record to 5-5, 4-3 America East.
