It was a frustrating night for the University of New Hampshire men’s and women’s hockey teams, as they both suffered one-goal losses at the hands of the University of Connecticut.

UConn’s Carter Turnbull completed a hat trick with a game-winning goal in overtime as the Wildcat men team fell to UConn, 6-5, on Friday afternoon at Freitas Ice Forum.

Meanwhile, in Durham, Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) stopped 27 shots but the UNH women were edged 1-0 by the University of Connecticut at the Whittemore Center.

In the men’s game, sophomore forward Lucas Herrmann (Lancaster, N.Y.) and freshman defenseman Luke Reid (Warman, Saskatchewan) each posted their first career goal. The Wildcats are now 3-6-1 (3-6-1 Hockey East), while ther Huskies improve to 4-5-1 (4-5-1 Hockey East).

UNH trailed 5-3 in the third before junior defenseman Ryan Verrier (Reading, Mass.) fired a wrist shot to the back of the net at 15:22 of the third to cut UConn’s lead in half, 5-4. Junior defenseman Will MacKinnon (Plymouth, Mich.) and Pierson were able to post assists on the goal.

UNH pulled senior goalie Mike Robinson (Bedford, N.H.) at 17:56 in exchange for an extra attacker.

Junior forward Filip Engarås (Stockholm, Sweden) tied the game at 5-5 with the extra attacker as he picked up the puck off a rebound in front of the net and buried it at 19:25.

The two teams will meet again today at 5 p.m. at the Whittemore Center.

TOUGH LOSS FOR UNH WOMEN

Closer to home, Boutilier stopped the final 26 shots she faced, including 15 in the second period for the Wildcat women.

UConn goalie Tia Chan stopped all 24 shots she faced and played 59:27. She exited the game for 33 seconds in the second period (out at 11:29 and returned at 12:02) because of an equipment malfunction. Samantha Carpentier-Yelle did not face a shot in her brief relief stint.

UConn’s Amy Landry scored off a rebound into an open net 41 seconds into the game, and that proved to be the only goal of the game.

UNH and UConn conclude the women’s weekend series today at Frietas Ice Forum at 6 p.m.
