Local college roundup: UNH men fall, women’s hoop wins

DURHAM, N.H. – Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) scored a career-high 34 points, but the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team was edged down the stretch in Sunday afternoon’s 68-66 loss to UMBC at Lundholm Gym.

Guadarrama made 11 of 20 field goal attempts, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the foul line in 36+ minutes. Tayler Mattos (New London, N.H.) recorded his first double-double as a Wildcat with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

UMBC was led offensively by R.J. Eytle-Rock’s 27 points.

UNH is now 4-5 overall, 3-3 in America East and 3-3 at home. UMBC improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference with a weekend sweep of the Wildcats.

With UNH trailing 64-62, Guadarrama hit two three throws to tie the score at 2:32, and his next two foul shots gave the ‘Cats a 66-65 lead at 1:56.

Eytle-Rock made 1 of 2 free throws to forge the eighth tie of the game, 66-66, at 1:43 and his layup gave UMBC a 68-66 lead with 58 seconds remaining. UNH’s Blondeau Tchoukuiengo (Montreal, Quebec) missed the front end of the 1-and-1 with 39 seconds left and Horvath pulled down the defensive rebound. With UMBC’s shot clock wining down, Eytle-Rock missed a 3-pointer and Martinez grabbed the defensive rebound with eight seconds left.

The Wildcats pushed the ball into the frontcourt. Tchoukuiengo caught a pass in the right corner with two seconds to play. He attempted to split a double team and his game-tying jumper fell short at the buzzer.

UNH WOMEN TOP BINGHHAMTON

Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) notched her first double-double of the season with game highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Hudson’s Amanda Torres registered five of her career-high seven steals in the fourth quarter to lead the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team to Sunday night’s 57-52 America East victory against Binghamton University at the Events Center.

UNH (3-7, 3-4 America East) ended the game on a 5-0 run and held Binghamton (2-7, 2-5 AE) scoreless for the final 2:11 to earn its first road victory of the season.

Torres scored seven of her 11 points in the fourth, and Derry’s Brooke Kane was the third Wildcat in double figures (12 points), highlighted by a 3-pointer that snapped a 52-52 tie with 1:08 remaining.

UNH had 12 steals and forced 24 turnovers, which resulted in a 26-12 advantage in points off turnovers.

Denai Bowman paced Binghamton with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals.

UNH MEN’S HOCKEY FALLS IN OT

Marc McLaughlin netted the game winner in overtime for the Eagles as the Wildcats fell to No. 2 Boston College, 3-2. The Wildcats are now 3-4-1 (3-4-1 Hockey East), while the Eagles improve to 6-2-0 (6-2-0 Hockey East).

The Wildcats picked up three points this weekend versus BC with a 4-3 overtime win on the road on Jan. 8, and tonight’s point in the OT loss.

Junior forward Angus Crookshank (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and senior forward Patrick Grasso (Ankeny, Iowa) each scored for the Wildcats. Junior forward Jackson Pierson (Zionsville, Ind.) and sophomore defenseman Kalle Eriksson (Leksand, Sweden) each posted two assists.

UML MEN FALL TO HARTFORD

Senior Obadiah Noel (Frederick, Md.) recorded 18 points and a season-high four steals, as the UMass Lowell men’s basketball team (4-8, 3-5 AE) faced a 75-58 setback against Hartford (8-5, 5-3 AE) to split the weekend America East series.

Sophomore Kalil Thomas (New Orleans, La.) joined Noel in double-figures, going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc to set a new career high with 13 points. Redshirt-sophomore Bryce Daley (Pittsfield, Mass.) added six assists, as well.

UML WOMEN COMPLETE SWEEP

Fueled by a dominant fourth quarter, the UMass Lowell women’s basketball team (7-4, 6-2 AE) completed the season sweep of Hartford (3-5, 3-5 AE) with a 74-52 decision over the Hawks on Sunday afternoon at the Chase Arena.

For the second consecutive game four different River Hawks found themselves in double-digit territory. Junior guard Kharis Idom (Orlando, Fla.) lead the charge, topping her season-high from yesterday with 19 points and five assists. Senior Tiahna Sears (Bunbury, Australia) added 15 points and a team-high six rebounds, while sophomore Jaliena Sanchez (Springfield, Mass.) tallied 14 points and a season-high six assists. Classmate Shamyjha Price (Pittsburgh, Pa.) rounded out the scorers with 12 points for her third consecutive double-digit performance.
