UNH men’s hockey postponed again, women win again
DURHAM – The University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team won’t take the ice for a game again until, well, next year.
The Wildcats’ two game series with Providence College set for this Sunday and Monday, Dec. 27-28, has been postponed.
That means the ‘Cats next scheduled game isn’t until Friday, Jan. 1, a 4 p.m. a holiday affair vs. the University of Connecticut at the Whittemore Center.
Meanwhile, there was hockey at the Whitt on Wednesday. Chavonne Truter (Uxbridge, Ontario) and Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario) both scored two goals to propel the UNH women’s hockey team to a 6-2 win over Holy Cross yesterday afternoon.
UNH enjoyed back to back games with the University of Maine at the Whittemore Center two weeks ago, losing the first in a shootout (but earning a regulation tie), then enjoying a 6-2 win.
But that’s been it for the Wildcats, who have now had eight games on their schedule postponed by Hockey East. It’s not certain whether they are all related to COVID-19.
The ‘Cats were supposed to play Merrimack College last Saturday and Sunday. This Sunday’s game had been slated to be a Providence and Monday night at the Whit before the postponements.
MILESTONES FOR ‘CATS’ WOMEN’S GOALIE
With a total of 11 saves yesterday, UNH goaltender Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) reached the milestone of 2,000 career saves and is No. 4 on the program’s leaderboard with 2,001. Boutilier was less than two minutes away from recording a second consecutive shutout before Holy Cross scored two quick goals late in the third period.
Three other Wildcats recorded multiple points: Rae Breton (Brighton, Ontario) tallied three assists; Avery Myers (Fargo, N.D.) recorded a goal and an assist; and Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario) finished with two assists.
Holy Cross starting goalie Jada Brenon recorded 10 saves and allowed three goals in 28:14. Julia Pelletier had nine saves and surrendered three goals in 31:46.
