NE-10, SNHU officially pull plug on winter sports season

By Staff and wire reports - | Dec 16, 2020

MANCHESTER – Southern New Hampshire University has officially pulled the plug on its winter sports season after its conference, the Northeast-10, did the same on Tuesday.

Given the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across the region, the Northeast-10 Conference Council of Presidents voted on Tuesday to cancel formal regular season and championship competition in the Conference’s seven winter sports. Impacted sports involve competition for both men and women in basketball, indoor track and field, and swimming and diving, as well as men’s ice hockey.

With this announcement, Southern New Hampshire University, in a release, stated it won’t even go outside the conference for competition.

The school “will not engage in independent athletic contests for the winter sports of men’s and women’s basketball, men’s ice hockey and women’s indoor track and field, as well as the non-NE10-sponsored sport of cheerleading, due to the current state of the pandemic.”

“The health and well-being of student-athletes and staff remain at the forefront of all decisions made at SNHU,” the school said in a statement,“which allows the University to fully support the Council of Presidents’ difficult, but prudent decision.”

Of course, now the next question is the spring, first with the conference.

“The Conference remains committed to supporting a return to play for NE10 competition in its 10 spring sports, whose 2020 seasons were cancelled at the outset of the pandemic,” the release said.

Meanwhile, it also said that no decision has yet been made regarding the resumption of fall sports. A determination will be made in January.
