DURHAM – The wait continues.

Nashua’s Kelsey Hogan knows it will come, but she and the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team she coaches are still seeking their first win of the young season.

Junior forward Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) led the Wildcats with 15 points and nine rebounds but the ‘Cats fell to the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday, 78-57, at Lundholm Gymnasium in their home and America East opener and the first ever meeting between the two teams as America East opponents.

The Wildcats are now 0-3 overall (0-0 America East), while the Highlanders improve to 1-1 overall (1-0 America East).

NJIT was led by Kenna Squier and Ellyn Stoll who each posted 19 points. Senior guard Amanda Torres of Hudson tallied 13 points for UNH. NJIT grabbed 43 rebounds and shot 51 percent from the field, while the Wildcats posted 35 rebounds and shot 26.5 percent.

UNH led 27-25 after a Torres layup with 4:25 left in the first half, but NJIT went on a 12-5 run to lead 37-32 at the break.

The Highlanders then outscored UNH 19-11 in the third quarter to take control, leading 56-43 heading into the final period.

The two teams will square off again at Lundholm today at 1 p.m. If the ‘Cats win, it will give Hogan, the Nashua North alum, her first win since being named the program’s permanent head coach a few months ago.

“It’s nice to be home, I will say that for sure,” Hogan said. “For us, with our youth and lack of experience, it’s confidence. … I do feel like our offense executed today, a few shot opportunities that are going to go our way next time.”
