Eagles spoil Hogan’s UNH debut; Wildcat men top KSC

By UNH Communications - | Nov 26, 2020

Kelsey Hogan’s debut as the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball head coach didn’t go exactly as she would have liked Wednesday afternoon at Chestnut Hill, Mass.

The Nashua High School North alum saw her Wildcats fall on the road to Boston College, 80-44.

Meanwhile, the UNH men’s hoop team opened its season with a 93-54 win over in-state Division III opponent Keene State in Durham at Lundholm Gym.

Hogan’s Wildcats led 6-5 early thanks to two free throws by Hudson’s Amanda Torres and the first career bucket by Adara Groman. But B.C. went on a 15-4 run to end the period up 20-10 and never looked back, leading 43-27 at the half.

Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) scored a career-high 12 points for the Wildcats. Delaruelle also finished with six rebounds, two assists and a steal in playing a game-high 33 minutes.

Torres finished with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and a team-high three steals. Former Pinkerton Academy standout Brooke Kane matched her career high of five rebounds.

Boston College was led by Taylor Soule (22 points, 12 rebounds).

Hogan will get a chance for her first win on Friday when the Wildcats visit Bryant University at 2 p.m.

GUADARRAMA LEADS UNH MEN

In the men’s game, Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) shared team-high scoring honors with 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Jayden Martinez (Chiblo, Texas) added a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards.

Blondeau Tchoukuiengo (Montreal, Quebec) tallied career highs of 18 points, four assists (tied for career best) and four steals, Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) hit 6 of 8 field-goal attempts in his collegiate debut for 12 points, and Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) scored nine points, pulled down eight rebounds and handed out three assists.

UNH (1-0) outscored KSC 51-23 in the second half courtesy of 55.6 percent shooting (20-36) from the floor. For the game, the Wildcats shot 49.3 percent (37-75) from the floor and connected on 8 of 9 free throws (88.9 percent).

Jeric Cichon led the Division III Owls with 13 points, Nate Siow added 12 and Jeff Hunter chipped in with 11 points.

“The whole goal was to try to look out for each other, try to stay safe, and let’s try to play a game,” UNH coach Bill Herrion said. “And we accomplished that today. We’re 1-0 and, guess what, we’re one of the very select teams in the country that was able to play a college basketball game today.”

UNH is tentatively slated to host Bryant on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 4 p.m.
