NASHUA – The Stars are still shining for the Nashua Silver Knights.

The Knights, who recently captured their fifth Futures Collegiate Baseball League championship, had several players named to the All-FCBL First and Second Teams, which were announced on Tuesday.

The Knights tied Brockton with a league high seven players across the two rosters.

Making the First Team roster for Nashua was pitcher Nick Guarino (Clark University), who went 5-0 overall, including a win in Game 2 of the FCBL Finals and regular season 1.12 earned run average; first baseman Dom Keegan (Vanderbilt), who led the league with 38 RBIs but also hit .317 with eight homers; outfielder Jared Dupere (Northeastern, .327, 6 HRS, 26 RBIs) , an MVP finalist; and John Mead (Franklin Pierce, .345, three HRs, 15 RBIs) as the designated hitter . It’s Dupere’s second straight season on the FCBL First Team.

Making the Second Team for the Knights was Dylan Jones (Franklin Pierce, .322, two HRs, 16 RBIs), who spit between the outfield, DH and catcher; shortstop Nick Shumski of Salem (utility, Merrimack, .258, three homers, 22 RBIs) and pitcher Griffin Young (Wheaton, 3-2, 1.75).

“I’m happy for everyone,” Knight general manager Cam Cook said. “I was afraid Guarino wouldn’t make it.”

That would have been a travesty in a lot of minds. And Cook also had some news as he said he has spoken to both Guarino and Young, arguably the Knights’ two best pitchers down the stretch, and both have agreed to return for the 2021 season.

Believe it or not, late August and early September is prime signing time for the next season’s rosters in the FCBL, and the Silver Knights have been busy.

They’ve announced on social media the signings of several new collegiate players, including Wyatt Scotti, pitcher, Northeastern; Liam Eliot, pitcher, UMass; Ryan Coleman, outfielder, UMass; Nashua’s Alex George, catcher, Southern New Hampshire University (via Bishop Guertin), Dylan O’Sullivan, first baseman, SNHU; Nathan Goranson, catcher, William & Mary; and Lucas Carmichael, outfielder, William & Mary.

“It’s exciting to see the range of schools that we’re hearing from,” Cook said. “Whether it was the exposure of playing this summer, the NESN broadcasts, all the exposure the league got, I don’t know. But we’re hearing from schools we wouldn’t get a sniff of in 2019.”

The Silver Knights will have a busy fall as they are holding their first ever Baseball Academy.

It includes weekly skills and field days, with the dates a few days the weeks of Sept. 14-18, Sept. 21-25, Sept. 28-Oct. 2 and Oct. 5-9.

The Skills Clinics, open to boys and girls ages 6 and up, will be run by Silver Knights alumni.

The Field Days, also open to youths ages 6 and up, will be an exercise-oriented event with games including, but not limited to, basketball, kick ball, and whiffle ball.

Cook and assistant general manager Katie Arend came up with the idea. Yes, it’s a bit of an extra revenue stream after a season where that was severely limited. But, Cook said, it’s a great way in the community to get kids outside especially if they are missing gym class due to remote learning.

“I know it varies from district to district, but some kids don’t have gym class right now,” Cook said. “So it’s like, ‘Parents, are you sick of your kids yet? Let’s get them outside for a few hours.”

Also, Cook feels the clinics and field days are a good use of Holman. “I think Holman should be used all the time, except when it gets shut down for a month to make sure everything is all set and working right,” he said. “Who knows how this will work, but hopefully it will take off.
