Nashua Defenders top Concord, 3-2, in series opener

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Aug 8, 2020

Don’t look now, but the eighth seed Nashua Defenders are just one win away from the New Hampshire COVID Baseball League semifinals.

They edged top seed Concord 3-2 Friday at Concord’s Memorial Field, and can clinch the best-of-three quarterfinal series with a win over the Cannons in Game 2 today at 1 p.m. at Bishop Guertin High School’s Elliott Field.

Nashua will send Zach Finkelstein to the mound to face Cannons’ rocket thrower Adrian Saravo, who’s been clocked in the low 90s.

Yesterday Nashua got a fine pitching performance from Henri Boudreau, who tossed a complete game four-hitter. He gave up two runs on four hits, walking just two while fanning five. Boudreau outdueled Concord’s Owen Kellington, who fanned nine over six innings but gave up all three Nashua runs.

Jake Mitchell paced Nashua with a hit and two RBIs, while Dan Trczepaz had an RBI double. Kyle Hsu went 1 for 3 with a walk.

Nashua will look to do better at Elliott than it did against the Cannons when it lost 8-3. The teams played to a 1-1 tie in Concord. The Cannons are now 17-3-1 while Nashua is 9-11-1.

If Concord wins today to force a third game, it will be Sunday at 11 a.m.at Memorial Field.
