Silver Knights bats suddenly alive and well — and booming

Telegraph photo by TOM KING The Nashua Silver Knights celebrate their first inning offensive explosion in a 10-1 win Wednesday night over New Britain at Holman Stadium.

NASHUA – He told us not to worry, and he was right.

Nashua Silver Knights manager Kyle Jackson maintained throughout the tough first homestand that his team would come around, especially offensively.

The Knights have done just that. They enjoyed their second straight 10-run night on Wednesday, pounding out 12 hits in a 10-1 rout of the New Britain Bees at Holman Stadium.

After an anemic offense for the season’s first week, Nashua has scored 20 runs on 23 hits in just over a 24-hour period.

“I really think it started when we got the five runs (this past Sunday) against Worcester,” said Jackson, who picked up his first career home win as skipper. “The team’s having fun. They’re enjoying being here because they’re hitting the ball. The timing’s coming back.”

Evidently it was worth the hour 20 minute wait due to rain, because Nashua (2-3) jumped on New Britain starter Macguire O’Sullivan (Assumption) for seven runs on six hits, sending nine to the plate. The big blows were back-to-back : A three run triple by Dom Keegan, and a booming two-run homer by outfielder John Mead. Dylan Jones later doubled in two runs in his second at-bat in the inning and just like that the Knights had a 7-0 lead. Jackson inserted Jones into the leadoff spot and the catcher responded going 3 for 5 and is hitting .400.

But Mead’s bomb was the talk of the park.

“It just felt like we were going to win yesterday when we were on the road,” said Mead. “It feels good now, we’re on a roll. I’m excited.”

Mead’s shot was a thumper, off the right-center billboards.

“At first I didn’t even think it was going to get out,” Mead said. “The past few games I flew out to the warning track. I was like ‘Please don’t catch it.'”

Nick Shumski went 3 for 4 and local Nick Perkins went 2 for 2. Meanwhile the beneficiary of all that offense were seven Nashua pitchers, starting with Josh Roberge (3.2 innings, five walks but seven strikeouts). Griffin Young was awarded the win with an inning and a third of scoreless relief to follow Roberge. Nashua pitching had the Bees off balance to the tune of a whopping 16 strikeouts.

Nashua will host Worcester for the second time in five days today at 6 p.m. It was that eighth inning vs. the Bravehearts when it all came alive.

“I think it’s because we haven’t played in four months,” Mead said. “We haven’t seen live (pitching), and now we’re getting ready to go. I mean I feel way more comfortable now.”

“During the whole 0-3 I said to them, ‘Keep having fun, keep working hard, it will eventually turn around if you keep a positive attitude’,” Jackson said.

We should have listened. His players did.
