MAY 10, 1945 – From sports editor Frank Stawasz’s column, with World War II winding down:

“Home for the first time in many months is Bob Jauron, former Purple football, baseball, basketball and track star, and later of Boston College where he played with the Frank Leahy national mythical football champion Boston College Eagles. Bob seems to have thinned out considerably but nevertheless looks to be in top-notch condition and quite capable of returning himself to any diamond or gridiron in the country.

“Also home for 30 or more days is Danny Murphy, who has but recently returned to this country after more than two years in the South Pacific.”

MAY 10, 1955 – Per Fred Dobens’ “Around the Town” column:

“There is absolutely no truth to the story going around town that the Chamber of Commerce will demand the return of the blanket sent to the horse Nashua last week.

“It seems that a lot of folks here who lost their shirt betting on the horse asked the Chamber to take such action on the grounds that they were going to need the blanket more than the horse.

“Chamber secretary Art Ryan said today that while this was undoubtedly true that the Chamber could not ‘reneg’ on its gift. He admitted that maybe if the blanket hadn’t been sent that the pleas of the losers might have held some weight. ‘Some guys in this town won’t eat good for a long time,’ he is reported to have said.

“Some of the bookies, we hear, are thinking of getting up a purse to send Nashua a gift, a slight token of their appreciation. They cleaned up Saturday.”

MAY 10, 1990 – “There’s nothing like a game against Portsmouth High School to build a team’s confidence.

“The Clippers turned out to be the perfect opponent for Merrimack on Wednesday. The Tomahawks bounced back from back-to-back losses to Spaulding of Rochester and Keene by blasting Portsmouth 24-0.

“Kristen Kolb and Cheri Gorski combined to pitch a no-hitter ‘Hawks (7-4 in Class L), who got another big day from Betsy Gilmore. Gilmore saved the no-hitter with a spectacular diving catch and she also went 3 for 5, including a grand slam and seven RBIs.”
